Isn't this the first year for the transfer rule? And shouldn't that depend on if he signed on for another year at UVA? Maybe he was not offered the choice to stay on at UVA?

To my knowledge scholarships are renewed each year, not sure when that's done, so he may have not of either signed up for the next year or been offerred the choice of staying at all. Thus, he would have beat the deadline to transfer this year where he most assuredly is locked in to the "sit out one year transfer rule for next year?"
As for the circumstances of Tierney's departure, I think I know the reasons but don't feel comfortable posting them.

There is no exception to the transfer rule based on whether you were offered, cut or whatever. If you transfer D-1 to D-1, you sit a year. It's a ****** rule, but we have to live with it now. Thank the NCAA for yet another dump on baseball players.
