My son is a senior in high school this yr. He has had 2-3 offers from JUCO, interest from a D2- to visit, letter from D1-stating they had seen him at a showcase and will follow progress. Went to showcase today and threw 90 for his fastball, 73 with movement for his change up. He has always pitched but over the summer spent time with a great pitching coach and made huge strides. We believe with further workouts over winter he could do even better. He was invited to the Area Code tryout in early July, he threw 88mph at that time. We are not sure where to go from here? Should he sign with one of the JUCO teams and see how he does this spring in High School ball and see if offers come in the spring? He would love to attend a D1 college. Anyone with knowledge we would appreciate input.

Welcome to the HSBBW.
First, accept an offer from one of the Jucos, he can commit and not required to attend next fall. That would be your alternate plan for now.
Second, you need to make a plan, has he contacted any coaches or just waited for them to find him, it's not going to happen that way.
Get an evaluation, attending a high profile showcase might help, especially for unsigned seniors (check out Perfect Game).
This is only the early signing period, but you need to make the most of what time is left. There are opportunities that become available in the spring and summer.
FWIW, something to think about...

One thing to keep in mind... If the DI is in the same area as the JC's, and/or if there's a chnace that the DI actually recruits players from those JC's... I would think twice about committing to the JC early. DI coaches tend to shy away from JC committed players... They want to keep a good relationship with those JC coaches. They could feel that they will end up with the player anyway if he attends a ceratin JC.

As far as signing early with a JC, I would say this. Make sure it is the exact situation you're looking for. If your son really throws 90 and has anything at all to go with it, he can wait... There will be "many" JC's that will make a great offer very late. Even the day before classes start! There aren't a lot of JC's in this country that won't find room for another 90 mph arm. But there are a few! if it's one of those few, go back to is it the perfect situation for your son suggestion.
