Free-Lance Star Baseball Capsules:

BATTLEFIELD DISTRICT

CAROLINE CAVALIERS

Coach: Frank Dow

Last year:15–4 overall, 11–3 district (tied for first)

Top returners:Sr. P/OF Joe Shiflett, Sr. IF Will Shiflett, Sr. P/OF Rory Smith

Top newcomers:Sr. IF Alex Jeter, Jr. UT Justin Pitts, Jr. OF Jonathon Didlake, Jr. OF Adam Dejarlais, Jr. P/IF Jake Dutton, Jr. 1B Taylor Buchanan

Outlook: The loss of nine seniors from last year’s district title team leaves a void, but there’s proven experience back in Joe and Will Shiflett and Smith, a second-team all-district outfielder.

CHANCELLOR CHARGERS

Coach: J.P. Gibbons

Last year:2–17 overall, 2–12 district

Top returners:Jr. P/OF Jason Morgan, Sr. P/OF Chris Barlow

Top newcomers:Sr. SS Ryan Greer, Sr. C Michael Selbe, Sr. OF Brandon Gardner

Outlook: Seven returning seniors should help the Chargers improve on last year’s seventh-place district finish. Morgan, a UNC–Chapel Hill commit and Barlow, who will play at Mary Washington, are key cogs at the plate and in the field.

COURTLAND COUGARS

Coach: Joe Sumler

Last year:7–13 overall, 5–9 district

Top returners:Sr. C Austin Ricketts, Sr. IF Jacob Neal, Jr. P/IF Zach Smith, Jr. OF Jordan Pates

Top newcomers:Jr. IF Christian Colbert, Jr. P/OF Conner Forster, Jr. IF Aaron Jacobs, Jr. IF Chaffin Haught

Outlook: After replacing six starters last season, the Cougars figure to be better in Sumler’s second year as coach. Neal and Smith, their top two pitchers, should play big roles.

CULPEPER BLUE DEVILS

Coach: Billy Mitchell

Last year:7–13 overall, 6–8 district

Top returners:Sr. OF/P Blaine Lafin, Sr. 1B/P Charlie Peavley, Sr. P Ramey Ferrell, Jr. SS/P JP Gorby, Jr. 3B Corey Slawson, Sr. 2B Jared Elliot

Top newcomers:So. OF/IF Jermaine Butler, Jr. P/OF Brett Smith

Outlook: With six starters returning, the Blue Devils could be a dark horse in the district race. Gorby, a .366 hitter, was a first-team all-district performer and fuels a solid offense.

EASTERN VIEW CYCLONES

Coach: Daniel Nobbs

Last year:12–11 overall, 8–6 district

Top returners:Sr. C Ben Pittman, Jr. OF/UT Nate Yates, So. OF/P AJ Stead, Jr. 1B/DH Austin Huff, Sr. SS Brandon Settle

Top newcomers: Sr. OF/1B Jordan Orndorff, Jr. P/UT Cain Finkle, Jr. 1B/DH Bishop Wormley

Outlook: The Cyclones rate as one of the early district favorites thanks to a talented lineup that features 10 returnees, including all-Region I performers Pittman and Yates. Stead is a battler on the mound.

JAMES MONROE YELLOW JACKETS

Coach: Joe Cralle

Last year:1–16 overall, 1–13 district

Top returners:So. SS/P Jay Scroggins, Sr. OF Brandon Hunt, Sr. 1B Chris Larimer

Top newcomers:Sr. OF/P Terry Clay, Jr. 3B/P James McFadden, Jr. C/P Tyler Martinez

Outlook: A core group of experienced JV graduates and the strong arm of Scroggins should be big assets for the Jackets as they try to move up in the Battlefield District standings.

KING GEORGE FOXES

Coach: Thad Reviello

Last year:20–5 overall, 11–3 district (tied for first); won district tournament, lost to Powhatan in Group AA quarterfinals

Top returners:Sr. P/1B Marc Antosz, Jr. 3B Zak Kegley, Jr. 2B/OF Cody Bell

Top newcomers:Jr. P/OF Lane Ward, JR. C Hunter Toliver, Jr. OF/IF Jay Buckner

Outlook: Many of the faces from last year’s record-setting team are gone, including Tampa Bay draftee Damion Carroll. But Reviello believes the Foxes can compete for a playoff berth if their new arms produce.

SPOTSYLVANIA KNIGHTS

Coach: Ryan Davenport

Last year: 15–8 overall, 11–3 district (tied for first)

Top returners:Sr. 1B/P Jake Fletcher, Sr. 2B/P Lucas Weaver, Sr. OF/P Jacob Conradt-Eberlin, Sr. 3B/C Corey Luttrell

Top newcomers:Sr. OF/P Ashten Dixon, Jr. P Sean Redmond

Outlook: Many of the starters from last year’s championship team are gone, but the Knights could make some noise if their new pitching develops and the hitters keep pace.

I hear ya Zeus.  I'm more than ready for spring/summer weather.  The weather was actually nice last Saturday when we went to see our son play (DII JUCO) - 70 F and sunny.

Back in February we sat through the coldest baseball games I ever experienced.  35 F weather and snow flurries.  Spent a week trying to get warmed back up.

KG was supposed to play Washington & Lee today.
I see the game as been canceled probably due to the new pitching rule
Heard KG used all 3  against Essex.

Agree.  Maybe a 8 run lead after 4 innings?  Any other thoughts?  I dunno.

NJCAA has multiple slaughter apps - 10 runs after 5 innings and 8 runs after 7 innings.  But that would not have helped in this case.  EV scored 14 runs in the 1st inning alone.

I honestly thought JM might have turned the corner after winning at least one game last year.  Guess not.

COURTLAND 3, SPOTSYLVANIA 1

Christian Colbert had an RBI single to get Courtland’s third-inning rally started.

Zach Smith struck out seven and got the win for Courtland (2–3, 1–1), which visits Eastern View today.

Lucas Weaver had all three of Spotsylvania’s hits.
