The way I understand it is that you swing or don't swing. If you swing then it's a strike no matter what even if you are hit by the pitch. To get first from a hit by a pitch then you cannot be swinging at all. It's not a foul ball because it hit his hands and not the bat. The hands are not part of the bat - they are part of the body.

Hope that makes sense.

just so I understand, I am not disagreeing, but why is it not a foul ball if the ball went foul when he swung at it, and hit it with his hands instead of the bat?

.....It cant be a foul ball, because at all levels (NFHS/NCAA/OBR) the ball is immediately dead when a pitch strikes a batter......

If he swung then its a strike.....if it was strike three then he is out....

so....dead ball....strike three....batter out...

Would it be a strike as well if the ball went fair? We had this happen recently. The batter was called out and it ended the inning w/ the tying run on third.

Thanks

Not an umpire but...
Doesn't matter where the ball ended up because it hit his body (hands) and not the bat. So, it's not a fair or foul ball, it's a dead ball and a swinging strike three. That was the correct call.
Good to see some folks posting for the first time. Welcome aboard.

Again, the ball is DEAD immediately upon striking any part of the batter. It cannot be a fair ball, it cannot be a foul ball. It is dead.

If the batter is offering at the pitch when he gets hit by the ball, it a dead ball strike.

Not trying to be insulting here but if you're going with the ole "the hands are part of the bat" idea then please understand that doesn't exist. There is the bat and there is the body. Two totally different things. I still hear people in the stands yell out "hands are part of the bat" when a hitter gets nailed in the hands with a pitch.
