3rd Strike rolls 10 feet behind home plate. The catchers throw hits runner in the helmet about 2 feet before runner reaches 1st base. Umpire calls runner out because he was running in fair territory.

My arguement was that a good throw from the catcher would be on the foul side of first base. There would be no reason to believe running in fair territory would interfere with the first baseman making the play.

Everyone,
Sorry for the lack of my posts lately, last Saturday I had my first child, Jack! So in a few years, I will be posting some, "and this is what my umpire last night did" posts.

Goodie,
If I am reading the post correctly, it sounds as if the ball rolled towards the first base dugout side of behind the plate and your runner was hit by a ball that was thrown seemingly into him. Even if your runner was in fair territory, as an umpire, I see this as nothing but a bad throw. One of the only ways I can see this as being interference on the runner is if he does what Justin Morneau did two weeks ago, and throw his body into the ball to draw the int.
The runner has to run in foul territory, however at some point the runner has to veer towards fair territory to touch his base which is completely in fair territory.......the runners obligation to not interfere at that point is almost eliminated ....If your estimation of 2 feet is correct then:

I agree with Johntaine and I see this as nothing but a bad throw......play on.....
