What is the pitching counterpart to "The Science of Hitting" by Ted Williams, or "Power Golf" by Hogan? Looking for a jargon free, simple (but not simplistic) and timeless book, to inspire and inform my 15yo.
Not sure, but I always wished Maddux (don't read this LUV Baseball ) and Hershiser teamed up to write one. The Mad Dog and the Bull Dog...how to dominate with moxi, brains and movement.
Sadly, the art of pitching is a thing of the past, as there's no money to be made with it. Still, hoping for a comeback.
At that age, he could probably handle Derek Johnson's The Complete Guide to Pitching. For my money, the best pitching book to come out in the last 15 years. If you want something a little less technical, maybe Dan Blewett's Pitching Isn't Complicated. But, if you're just focused on the mental aspects, you can't go wrong with the Dorfman book mentioned above.
Thanks for the suggestions, and keep them coming. For the record, Son #2 is very good to excellent at the mental part of pitching, and is working a lot in the weight room. I think he needs to pay a bit more attention to mechanics, to try and get the most out of his still growing body. It's not so much that he has to decide on a delivery, but just that I think he should expand his understanding of what goes into a throwing motion.
I just read Nolan Ryan’s Pitcher’s Bible, with Tom House. An easy read, and a nice blend of mechanics, mentality, and an emphasis on conditioning and lifting.
