Now that the season is over (for some of our kids)....trying to compile season stats has brought about a quandry.
Pitching stats for a 7 inning game vs. a 9 inning game. Of course, all the pitching stat rules apply, in HS baseball as in MLB, however there are a few exceptions, one of which seems to be unanswered. I am hoping the good folks here can provide an answer.
In a 7 inning game, a pitcher must only complete 4 innings, to qualify for a win, due to the 7 inning game. (This is different than MLB, as 5 innings are required)
To record a save, the MLB criteria must be met, in regards to finishing the game, tying run reaching the on deck circle, etc. However, under MLB rules, any pitcher that finishes the game, and pitches at least 3 innings also qualifies for a save, regardless of the score.
The long winded route to my question....
Would a HS relief pitcher receive the same benefit of a starting pitcher needing fewer innings, of finishing the game, and recording a save, if he only pitched 2 innings? Regardless of the score. (This is provided all other criteria was met, as in MLB)
I have searched the Texas HS Rule book, various sites for a documented rule, and have come up empty.
Can anyone provide "documented" rules to this effect? As much as I value the opions expressed here, some of which are more valuable than others, an opinion does not count in regards to rules.
How do HS coaches score this? Summer Select Coaches?
