This past weekend a college coach said he developed a plan to translate all the player profiles he receives from parent and players.

MPH:
subtract 5 mph from what the player claim he throws

subtract 3 mph from what their HS Coach claims he throws

Reduced 2 inches from the players who claim they are 6 feet tall

Add .5 seconds to their 60 YD Times

Good coaches don't go by player profiles, they go out and check it out themselves, including the GPA.

My player is 6'3" inches give or take. In cleats and being long legged he appears to be about 6'5". Scouts and coaches used to tell him he wasn't being truthful about his height. Some do take notice.
Any college coach that recruits based on information given to him by parents will be in trouble. The same can be said for HS coaches he does not personally know. So none of these numbers matter at all, add or substract. Questionaires are information gathering devices for the purpose of contact information , future camp invitations and seeing if the student is interested in your school. How many kids have hurt themselves by putting down 6'0 6.8 89mph and then the coach sees them at a showcase and they are 5'10 7.2 83mph? The fact is they are going to see you before they believe you. And who can blame them. Be honest on your questionaire be honest period. How about in the comments section just say "Im not the fastest guy in the world. I dont throw as hard as some other guys. Im not very tall. But I can play the game. And if you come watch me you will see that Im a winner". I can bet you that will get a coaches attention and he will respect that. But by all means put down what you actually do. If your 6'0 6.8 89 great. That still doesnt mean you can play the game. They will see you play , they will evaluate your ability and they will make the decisions based on that.

I like that, Coach May! My son will probably top out at 5'11" and is working hard on improving his speed, but he can play. In a couple of years, we'll let you know if it works... Smile

Yup...often times there is a huge discrepancy between what is listed and what really is...

Player: Chuckie Cheese
Nickname: Lil' Yeller Feller
Positions: CF/P/C
Height: 6'-5"
Weight: 225lbs.
Bats/Throws: Switch/Left
Gun Reading from Position: OF:89... IF:90... 1B:90... C:90... Pop Time: 1.95 sec.
Fast Ball Velocity: 92
60 yd: 6.76 sec. 40 yd: 3.89sec. Track Conditions: Dry, cool.

Cheese is an "08" or so CF/LHP/C from Truth or Consequences, NM. At 6'5" he has a thick, but solid and strong build. At the plate he looks like a very pull conscious type eater with good rhythm and good fork speed. His swing is a bit long, but he can hit the spot and shove it in with power...plenty of potential. On the mound he throws a tantrum every so often and needs to gain some control. The tantrums come in from a low angle...very deceiving...and in the low 90s. Cheese could develop into a highchair level college guy with a bit more maturity. His 'off taste' stuff is very good; in fact, his 'spit-up' might be his best pitch. The 'off taste' stuff really had hitters holding their nose and off balance. Cheese hopes to be an excellent student.

IMO the best information a coach can get is the following : Thanks for taking the time to fill out our questionaire. Could you please list the top 3 08 players you have seen or played against. Thank You.

Billy Bob.

For the your HS coach: Please list the top 3 08 players that you have seen or played against. Thank You.

Billy Bob.

Believe me when a college coach gets the word on a player from a player and a coach that does not play with or for them and this name constantly comes up that player will get a serious look. Also: Please list the professional scouts that have seen you play:
When you can list professional scouts Names and phone numbers and they can vouch for your abilities it goes a long ways. Coaches want to feel that others they respect have the same feel for the player that they do. It seems to validate in their mind that they are not off base.

Then they are going to see you play at some point and time. My son got an offer from an SEC school during his Jr HS season based on a one day showcase right before the start of the HS season. Based on scouts reports , PG reports , word of mouth from other HS coaches and 5 throws to second base - 10 swings on the field at a showcase.

Its important that you be a kid that others respect and appreciate the way you play the game. I dont care how good you are if your an a***** no one is going to put your name on that questionaire. Why? Because they dont like you. And pro scouts are going to say "Yes the kid can play but I dont like his make up at all". In a world where only 35 guys can make the roster at D-1 programs. And there are more and more kids chasing the dream of playing college baseball. College coaches are even more inclined to pass on a potential problem child. Long post sorry. Sometimes I get carried away.
I could see a coach joking around about some quesionable numbers on questionaires, but to automatically subtract and deduct numbers indiscrminatly seems plain stupid. And adding .5 to the 60 time is ridiculous!! That turns a kid 7.10 decent speed into 7.60 plow dragger. It turns a blazing 6.6 to a decent 7.1 . If he does that he going to miss an opportunity to go see some kids.
He11, why even send the questionaire, According to this coach everyone is a lyer and they suk to boot.
