Since baseball is synonomous with Americana - I will tell this story.

It was in the late 1960's - and my Dad knew many of the Mets players (Dad played pro ball for awhile.)

I used to go to many games with my Dad every year. And when we went - we got treated real nice.

One day - I think it was in 1968 - but not sure - Dad told me that after the game - we were going to meet Lindsay Nelson, Ralph Kiner and Bob Murphy. They were announcers for the Mets and Kiner was a great player also.

After the game - up we went into the broadcasters booth.

What my Dad didnt know was that I was pissed at Ralph Kiner. I was about 8 or 9 years old - and he had said for a few days that Kenny Boswell - my favorite player - wasnt swinging the bat well.

I played it cool - until we got into the booth.

Then I confronted Mr. Kiner and asked him why he was saying bad things about Boswell. (My dad wasnt very happy at that moment.) Kiner said some nice things about Kenny - and thought it was over. I didnt agree - and demanded a written apology from Mr. Kiner (I kid you not).

At that point - I thought my Dad was going to crush me right there - but Kiner - and Nelson just laughed.

Kiner opened his satchel and took out a postcard - and wrote this:

That is my July 4th baseball story. LOL

100 % true - then Dad gave me a whooping on the way home.

LOL
You spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time. ~Jim Bouton, Ball Four, 1970

Its, Very funny story. Your Mets are part of my July 4th story. Tonight, watching the Braves/Cardinals game it started to rain in Atlanta and as the field is being covered the announcers brought up the game in '85 between the Mets/Braves that lasted 19 innings(won by the Mets) and ended after 4 am because of rain delays.

My wife of 362 days when the game started was also 9 months pregnant and a huge Mets fan and I, Braves. She had started labor pains in the early innings but would not leave for the hospital until the game was over. We
watched every inning of that game in '85 as the pains got closer and closer. When Rick Camp-pitcher hit a HR
in the 17th inning to tie the game-I cheered and she moaned Big Grin. But still she would not go, finally in the 19th inning Camp(last pitcher available) ran out of gas and the Mets pushed across some runs. Camp finally
struck out to end the game. Two hours later-6:00 AM-our first son was born. In less than 2 hours our first son will be 21 and right now the wife and I are waiting for the rain to end in Atlanta so we can finish watching the Braves/Cardinals and Son of a Moc, well....tomorrow he can legally buy a beer Wink.

Thanks for indulging me.
