We all recommend finding the "right fit"; unfortunately, sometimes things change quickly in college baseball. For my freshman son, the head coach retired at the beginning of fall practice and the assistance was named head coach, plus a new pitching coach was hired. This was the beginning of the end for son. "The fit had changed". Some of you emailed me about what to expect from the new pitching coach (I appreciate your information) but being the eternal optimist, I felt because of his talent and makeup he would be OK. Throughout the year, he never complained or criticized the coaches; however, he had to endure a very long and difficult season. In the season ending interview with the head coach, the coach again offered him his very good 3/4 scholarship(very surprising); however, this time son declined his offer, simply saying "it's not a fit for you or me and I'm moving on". Starting over!
Fast forward -
He started fall practice today at a JC and for the first time in almost a year, son is smiling, laughing, and having fun again on the baseball field. Also, he has received several emails from D1 programs that had previously recruited him wanting to reestablish contact. Not too surprising, since he is a LHP (90-93)and switch-hitting outfielder with 6.5 speed drafted out of high school, plus B+ student. (Sorry, dad had to brag a bit.)
Please understand I am not posting this to criticize anyone but to inform others that sometimes "the fit" does change and you (player) need a backup plan. Son knew he needed to make a change, so he sought advise from a couple area scouts and made the tough decision to move on.
Understand your situation, know your options,
"Be prepared" and don't complain/whine, just move forward.
Coach May, UNC is one of the schools that has emailed him and he is thrilled about their interest.
Hopefully, with a good year he can make the move back to another D1 or draft opportunity that will be a better fit for everyone involved.
