I assume it is because of the economy but I am seeing a lot of private school HS kids transferring to public high schools and they do not have to sit out a season

I saw one school that had 4 kids transferring in and they may be in the starting lineup

In our area, they would have to sit a year if they just transfered for the sake of transferring. Unless a family moved into the school district, I think that gets waived.

I would think the reason for transferring to public school is so they would start as opposed to sitting or platooning at the private schools since the privates are at an advantage since they have no boundaries like the publics and can get talent from all over. The players may have a better shot at starting for their public school. Private schools are like travel teams and publics are like rec all-stars in that sense.

I haven't heard of too many parents cutting back their kids baseball expenses if the kid has any shot at playing varsity or beyond. I'd bet none of them will be swinging less than $300.00 bats.

My son transferred from a private to public school during his junior year and did not have to sit. He actually wanted to attend a high school out of our attendance zone, but we checked with UIL and they said he'd face a one-year sit-out rule if he attended any public school except the one in his neighborhood. We had to sign some affadavits attesting that he was not transferring for athletic reasons, but everything was on the up-and-up and we had no problems.
I would think that the economy is the driving force. I know in 2002 after tech crashed, one private school in Dallas closed down their suburban campus, leaving the downtown campus open. They lost over 100 students.

There was an article in the local paper about one of the private schools in north Dallas closing down due to enrollment going down.
A Catholic high school in suburban Chicago announced yesterday that it is shutting its doors at the end of the school year....

Their football team won 7 state football championships in 7 year--the streak ended in '08, the girls basketball team won state this year, and cheerleading came in 3rd....it was an athletic powerhouse.

It is sad when any school or business closes. A part of us closes, too.
