Son's team lost the Championship Series of the NECBL last night after a great run into and through the playoffs.

I sit here and reflect - and as any dad would - once again think about my son's summer experience in this great league.

I rarely write about him - but what the heck.

After a slow start with the bat - and a minor shoulder injury that caused him to miss about 40% of the season - the kid just dont quit.

Going into the last week of the season - struggling to just make the playoffs - he returns to the lineup - goes on a 7 game hitting streak batting about .420 - steals 8 out of 8 bases (had 20 of 21 for the season with the only miss on a steal of home) and plays great defense.

They make the playoffs - win the quarters and the semis - and make it all the way to the finals.

Every game - he is covered with dirt from head to toe. Playing in front of crowds that ranged from 2000 to 4500 fans.

A filthy dirty mess after every game - with a smile as wide as the Atlantic and a still burning love for the game.

I know it is nothing compared to the many accomplishments of so many others here - but when I think of him and what he has learned from the ups and downs of this game - I just smile.

I wish I could be more eloquent - but this will have to do.

Itsinthegame,
Thanks for sharing. You should be proud. The baseball diamond is a great place. It allows parents to look at their sons, applaud his achievements and share his pain. The feelings are so intense that they brings tears to our eyes. Few things in life give us an opportunity to be that close to our boys.
Thanks,
Fungo

Its, those words convey both a strong and vivid image in my view. Knowing your son leaves every ounce of energy on the field and plays the game the right way is awfully satisfying. You have every reason to be proud and am glad you shared it. Vermont and Newport are two of the very best environments to spend a summer playing ball and ours were very lucky they had that chance.
You should be proud of your son. You post on here all the time and you rarely if ever mention your son. Im glad that you shared this story with us and you should this kind of story is what makes this site so great. Im sure I will see you and your son this fall and I am looking forward to it. Your feelings of pride in seeing your son excell at what he loves to do (its a wonderfull thing).

And that is what makes being a player's parent so great !!! Something that "non-baseball" people just don't seem to get.

Kudos to your son for bouncing back and may next year be even better.

It's - thanks for the post. As I am sure you know, it is LL World Series time once again, and as it has been for the past several years now, I am glued to ESPN. ESPN2, or wherever they are playing. I sure hope you and your team played hard but also were able to experience the pure joy of the game. I would say that my son's 12yr old LL summer experience would still rank at the top of his list (and mine) as one of the best times ever so far.
