Pete Rose was probably the most competitive player all-time between the lines, always pushing the box and taking advantage of every opportunity to win but was also just as reckless off the field.

It's impossible to make a flat out yes/no statement, but.................

Was Pete Rose possibly a candidate to be a performance enhancing user in a different era?

Does his personality fit the performance enhance users persona?

Was he a survivor because of the techno-medical generation was not there yet?

Is he just darn lucky because of his era that gambling was his only poor choice?

Just a little food for thought

The bigger damage that steroids made to baseball was to create the paranoia that don't let us understand that players used steroids in an effort to became better and not for the wish to cheating. At that point steroids were not prohibited in baseball, and it is not fair to conden our baseball heros for somethingh that was generally used for 90% of the players. Hitters, pitchers, etc....
The use of steroids is not about personality, it is an era where players (and I say most of them) used it. Pete Rose probably had used steroids if he played in that era, specially at the end of his carrear, but even so, he still been one of the greater players tha play the game ever.

Gee .... not a kind question ... it's like assuming if a guy smokes is he also an alcoholic ...

Regardless of your personal opinion of Pete, I just think this isn't anyplace I want to go, nor is it a good subject for idle speculation.

#1 I'm a Rose fan, should he be in the HOF .

#2 I think that a Pete Rose mentality would look at performance enhancing alternatives once his natural skills were slipping. IMHO. He is a bullheaded battler who took no prisoners and winning was everything. Other players also fit that mold.

#2 We profile people and their tendencies everyday in life. It may not have been fair to throw Rose's name there, but part of the territory of being a professional athlete is to be singled out and "chatted" about. They loved it when they were in their prime, and just because their gone, doesn't make them disappear from our discussions.

#4 Speculation happens everyday on this site. I'm really sorry if I hit a nerve, that was not the intent. I was just wondering if there was a possible corralation between an ultra-competitive make-up and performance enhancing drug use.

#5 Just looking for some cold weather converstation
