Deep Run will get its chance to avenge its loss in the Central Region championship game, when it faces James River Saturday at noon at Christopher Newport University.
The game marks the first time that the championshipo game has ever featured two teams from the same region. The pitching matchup features the Central Region's two first-team all region pitchers, Deep Run's Deck McGuire (heading to Ga. Tech) vs. James River's 11-0 Austin Stadler.
James River would seem to have the advantage going in. Stadler has three full days' rest since his outing Tuesday, while McGuire went all 7 on Tuesday and was called upon to close the last 2 innings Friday as well. James River has also been sharper on defense, playing flawlessly Friday while Deep Run had to overcome 4 unearned runs and another run caused by a misplayed ball in the outfield to edge South County.
But, as we all know, you have to win it on the field! It's baseball, and anything can happen. James River may have won the first time, but that won't help it on Saturday. Should be a great game!
