General knowledge

Pre-covid

  • Teams were allowed to disperse 11.7 scholarships amongst 27 players (counters), and were allowed to have 35 players on a team roster.
  • The minimum scholarship was 25 percent

2021 Season

  • Team given unlimited Roster with scholarships dispersed amongst 32 players (counters)
  • Scholarship minimum of 25 percent was waived.

Proposal

  • 35-man threshold
  • Elimination of 25 percent scholarship minimum
  • Elimination of counters (No. of players that can get scholarship $$$)

Other items on the table:

  • Rules of classifying redshirts
  • 3rd paid assistant coach

Proposed Vote will occur during the ABCA Convention in Jan.

So my interpretation is that if this is enacted that next year the extra eligibility/headcount introduced by COVID would be out of the system.  Meaning that there will be some number of players who theoretically have eligibility but no place to go.

Regarding the proposed elimination of minimum scholarship size, it seems that that would favor the more prestigious programs, right?  Now they can have 35 players "on scholarship", whereas in the past maybe they'd lose kids who didn't want to be walk-ons?
