Here's a true stroy.
I was 5'6" 120 lbs (and pretty weak--could only bench about 90 lbs) when I tried out for the JV baseball team as a freshman. I barely made it, but for my glove only. I hardly ever hit it out of the infield, even in BP. Our HS had a "homerun" derby. My farthest hit was measured at only about 200 ft.
The next year I was about 5'7" 125 lbs (benching about 100 lbs) and I made the team as a semi starter at 2nd base. I was also the mop-up man (because I only threw about 70). My hitting was ok--I batted about .300, but didn't get any extra base hits. I still couldn't get the ball out of the infield consistantly, even in BP.
After HS got over I decided to join a rec league. All of the sudden something just clicked and I suddenly began to hit well. For a guy my size now I have a lot of pop. A few games ago I hit a ball that rolled to the fence in center (392'). Another time I got jammed, but the ball still went over the center fielder's head and I had a stand up double (could have probablly made it to third but it was the 7th inning with 2 outs and we were down by 7). There was another time when I got under the ball badly, but it still went to the fence in right center (370').
I don't really understand how my hitting has gotten so much better so fast. I am on a team that plays 2 times per week and has 2 practices per week. Usually I take a few hundred swings in the batting cage a few times per week. I haven't gotten much bigger (1" 5 lbs since the beginning of the season) or much stronger (can bench about 10 lbs more) since the beginning of the season, yet I'm hitting the ball 100 feet farther.
