My son is throwing at a showcase in a few weeks. Its one of the schools that is high on his list, so we'd obviously like him to do well. It will be on a saturday afternoon. The sunday before (six days prior) he will attend a pitching lesson.

I guess my question is what kind of throwing (how much as well) should he do in between? Anyone else have any other tips for getting the most out of his velo? Thanks in advance.

I'd recommend a couple light pens during the week with the last one 3 days before the camp so that he gets two days of rest before pitching at the camp. Focus on location during the pens but finish off with 4 or 5 pitches for velocity - somewhere in the strike zone.

Rest the day after the last pen then play catch the day before the camp. The idea is to make sure he's comfortable with his control so he can pitch at the top of his normal range without having to worry about backing down on his velocity to be able to throw strikes.

Velocity for most pitchers varies from outing to outing so he just needs to go out there and give it what he's got that day.

Koufax, it really depends on how much he throws on Sunday. If he throws 100 pitches in a complete game, I would not have him do anything on Monday. Tuesday, some light throwing to get the kinks out. Wednesday, an easy bullpen to keep accuracy sharp, Thursday some long toss and take Friday off.

If he doesn't throw very much on Sunday, you can ramp it up a little more than that. Maybe do a light bull pen on Wednesday and a more intense bull pen on Thursday. Friday should be an off day either way so he is fresh.

Answers from CAdad and bbm are on target. This somewhat depends on his schedule right now. If he is long tossing and doing flat ground work I would continue this or do it 3x per week leading up to the event.

Assuming it was a normal lesson on Sunday, I would long toss and do some flat ground work on Tuesday, throw a light pen (20ish pitches) on Thursday just to keep his feel, and the not throw and go to the showcase and do his thing on Saturday.

Much of this depends on his current work out and throwing routine. If he is lifting right now I would not lift after Tuesday or Wednesday. Get in a light jog and stretch on Thursday and complete rest on Friday.
