Has anyone been invited or received information in regards to the Advanced Skills Camp that is being held at the McHenry Co. Hurricanes Facility on January 20? I recieved a letter from the assistant coach at Creighton, Rob Smith, and aparently there are suppose to be coaches from Creighton, Purdue, Miami of OH, Valpo, and Iowa. If anyone has any more info as to whether this would be worth while attending, that would be greatly appreciated.

P25, he needs to throw 3 sets (15-20 per set, with 5 minutes in between sets)of 4 seam fast balls at distance of 70 to 90 feet (on a line) at maximum arm speed with proper technique and footwork 3 times per week in the off-season. In the off season do a number of roatational sets of exercises on the core. If your son is strong enough ad a medicine ball. I hope I just saved you some money.
On increasing velocity, the advice by playball is pretty good. I would agree with it as long as the young man had a good solid 2-3 months off. It is really important that these guys take time off their arms. Also, in my experience, the only way to truly increase velocity is too decrease the time it takes to recover after a throwing session. the best way to do this is to implement a very good scapular resistance program coupled with a rotator cuff program. The medicine ball stuff is great also, so good call on that Playball2

If you can recover faster you can throw more, if you throw more you can throw harder.

Just my two cents, i am off to work now. But I love talking about this stuff.

I would add that if you don't have a 70-90 foot lane, then using weighted balls from a shorter distance works equally well under proper supervision. Weight may be systematically increased during each session or gradually over the course of the throwing program. However, this approach assumes proper mechanics are already in place.

Nearly every college coach that recruited my son talked about increasing his core strength to add velocity. Now that he is there, core strength & flexiblity is highly emphasized as a part of his training regimine.

He has added significantly to his velocity in the last 18 months that he has been working core, along with other things, but I temper that with he was also a physically immmature 17 year old and his maturation may have an impact also.
Kirk was mid 80's guy at 17u, started going from mid 80's to upper 80's last Summer. Sometimes touching 90. I spoke with Coach Sottolano(Armys Coach) down in Jupiter this past Fall and he said he was sitting 90 and going up from there. He could not say enough good things about him.. CPLZ, you have good reason to be proud of your son.
Not only is he going to have a chance to play ball at the next level, the Westpoint education isnt going to hurt either!
Great job to all concerned. I understand that this was the second year that this camp with these colleges has been offerred in the area.

This was an extremely well run camp with coaches from Creighton (2), Purdue (2), Miami of Ohio, Valparaiso, St. Joe's and Iowa. The pitchers received a great deal of individual attention and the catcher workout was very through. Hitting in the afternoon was just as well organized and beneficial.

A cold day for sure, but it was well worth the effort.

CPLZ,

Coach Hamburg is coming this weekend from army if you guys wanted to stop down and see him.

He was just named the assistant coach of the year for DI. That whole staff is just tremendous. And Spark saying "the Westpoint education isnt going to hurt either!" is about the biggest understatement i have ever heard. You are pretty much set for life once you grad from there.
