I would like to start by saying that I have been reading all the good advice and wisdom on this board for a couple of years, preparing and trying to understand what is to come. I’m using my first post to request some advice if possible. I don’t want to go into a lot of detail but I can if people feel it is need.

The question is a winter school prospect camp this weekend for a young 2019 at a school that is high on his list, currently. However, lets just say he got sick two days ago and this morning his fever broke but still has chest congestion. Doctors says he is fine to go and will not injury himself or cause any damage but he is not 100% or 90% for that matter. My father is going with us to the camp because he wants to see the campus as well so it was going to be a boys weekend before the holidays. Do you still go? Do you go and talk to the coach at the camp and explain the situation? Do you go and just watch the camp and see the campus while not worrying about it at this stage since he is a 2019, even though it is already paid for?

One other note the camp is a 5.5 hour drive so it doesn’t make for quick up and back type of trip.

Thank you for the advice and opinions.

Things to factor in...

Is the school a D1 that is likely to recruit early?

Is the player a D1 prospect that is likely to sign early?

Today, does he feel physically well enough to go out and perform close to his ability?

How extensive has any dialog been with the school and what sense of urgency is there, if any?

Has the school seen him play before?  Does he play with a club organization that will likely put him in front of the RC from this school again later?

CaCO and Cabbage are on target.  My take is

THIS:  Don't go; contact them and explain that he is ill and ask if they can apply the fee to a future camp.  I can't imagine that they wouldn't do that.  My kid did this before due to a slight injury the week of the camp, and didn't have any issues with the school allowing postponement.

UNLESS:

1) Your son's "less than 100%" is still going to be attractive to the school.  This takes into account your son's skill level and the school's level.

2) Sense of urgency.  If the school normally recruits about a dozen per class and they are already at 10 for the 2019s, then I understand feeling that he has to take the chance.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of kids aren't 100% at a winter camp anyway, due to it being offseason.

Thank you for the advice

I don't believe there is a sense of urgency with regards to this school at this time.  It is a lower level D1 and they haven't seen my son play yet but do attend one of the tournaments his travel team will be at this summer.  Physically other than the coughing he feels find and would really have more of an issue doing the 60 physically.

We are probably leaning to making it more of a boys weekend and go to see the campus at this time of year (colder than we are typically use to experiencing).  Probably see the new Star Wars and call it a weekend before the rush of the holiday's next weekend.

Again thank you

How does a potential recruite see the number of kids recruited for particular schools as mentioned in earlier post.  Contacting the college RC?

Go to Perfect Game, Click on HS....then commitments. The info can be obtained by selecting  grad year and school of choice.

Be advised, not everyone reports commitments. If there is 8 on the list, one could assume a few more exists.
