Kid is a "good" but not great high school player. I've only seen him play 2-3 times. But is mainly focused on a different sport. Is now getting the usual camp invites and his parents asked my opinion on whether it was worth it to go to any of them. Currently a junior.

My advice was that most camps were just money makers for the schools. However, if an unknown kid shows up, and is tall and runs a fast 60, then it might be worth it because height and speed gets noticed.

Kid is 6'1" 185-190 lbs, (lean, muscular, athletic) and is fast. I don't know how fast, but he is a center fielder, and his parents said he has always been the fastest kid on every team he has played for.

Here's where it gets tricky. Due to work commitments, he is not playing high school baseball during his junior year. Hasn't played Legion. Played travel as a kid, but isn't doing showcase or travel now. Don't know what his plans are for senior year. I thought it was strange that they would even consider sending him to a camp since he isn't currently playing. But, I basically gave them my opinion of camps and left it at that.

Totally agree with this - doesn't sound like he wants to play baseball at all but Mom and Dad would like to brag.

It was odd. I don't know them well enough to ask why he would consider going to a camp or two if he's not even playing.

But, the kid might have the kind of raw talent, body type, and speed that would get noticed if he attended. Kid does have a good swing and some power.

But it would be hard to justify why he's not playing and whether he is more committed to another sport.

I have to agree with Golfman.  Maybe the kid just enjoys the game and being a part of his HS team (which is fine).  Your description does not sound like the kind of player that really wants to continue beyond HS.  And that's ok too.

I had a fifteen year old on a 16u team whose parents talked constantly about the major college programs recruiting him. He was receiving letters and invitations to camps after filling out the online recruiting form.

The parents became so obnoxious I had to do something. I tried to explain the situation. In return they started showing me the letters. I went online to a ranked ACC team and filled out an online recruiting form for my dog. My dog received letters word for word identical to the kid's letters except the name.

My dog was weak on grounders. But he had great range as an outfielder (if baseball was played with frisbees). At the plate he was strong. He was a good eater.
