My son committed this Wednesday.  Interestingly, after all the showcases he has done, all the huge elite tournaments and the college camps, he was offered by a coach that did not see him at any of those events!  My son was in the right place at the right time.  He was throwing a bullpen when the head coach stopped by to see his pitching coach (who happen to be a friend.)  The head coach loved what he saw had a quick chat with myself and my son afterwards about the school and his grades.  He received my sons contact information and started calling him every other day for a couple weeks which finally ended in his offer.

You never know when and where that one coach is going to see you!

Certainly congrats.  Nice to be found.  And, absolutely not diminishing the achievement, but just not a huge fan of luck (right place/right time, happenstance) being the deciding factor in moving onto the next level of play.

Is it possible that earlier targeted schools, be they at "elite tournaments" or at camps, were not the appropriate college targets for him?

I never said he didn't receive any interest/offers (he did) from the showcases, camps and tournaments.  He just chose a school in the end that saw him at a place other than those. If we had to do it all over again, we probably would not have changed much.

The morale to the story as several have noted, you never know who is watching you and when they are going to be watching.  When you are looking for the opportunity to play at the next level, every bullpen, round of BP, warm up and fielding work should be taken as though it was in front of your next coach.  When you do that, it is never luck.
