Shelby, N.C., home of The American Legion World Series (ALWS), once again brought the "wow" factor. Total paid attendance for the 15-game 2013 ALWS was 104,726, eclipsing the 2012 record of 101,925.

The championship game, Brooklawn, N.J. vs. Petaluma, Calif., had a paid attendance of more than 6,800, which is the highest attendance since the 1954 ALWS in Yakima, Wash.

The championship team in 1954 was San Diego, Calif. Post 492, and runners-up were Gastonia, N.C. Post 23.

My son's team played at the ALWS in Shelby last year. The Shelby community and the tournament organizers did a fabulous job and were so welcoming. The boys will never forget their experience in Shelby and were sorely disappointed to lose in their regional this year.  My hometown hosts the CWS, and we saw many parallels in the players experience in the ALWS. They were treated very well. Kudos to Shelby for a first class tournament!
