Alec Keller of Richmond, Va and Freeman HS was just named the Player of the Year in the Ivy League.

Alec led the Ivy in hitting last year.  He led the Hawaii summer league in hitting the summer before that.

This kid was not given the time of day by the D1's in VA in high school.  I don't usually get too high or low on any kids, but I knew this kid could play.  At 6ft 1in & 195 lbs he runs a 6.5 60 and hits left handed.  Add a 1500 2 part SAT and believe me I was shocked that UR, WM & UVA didn't take a flier on him.  After he was a HR short of the cycle against No 1 UVA earlier this year, rumor has it that Coach Mac wondered if they "missed" someone.

It will be interesting to see if any MLB teams take a chance on him.  I know he wants to play baseball.  He does not have a Plan B.  Ivy Leaguers can be risky drafts because they obviously have employment options beyond baseball.  I know for a fact Keller has not even bothered to create a resume or applied for any jobs.  If you know scouts in NJ get them over to work him out.  I've reached out to some of my contacts.  Will be fun to see what happens in June.

I'm not surprised at all.  He's got great plate discipline and makes pitchers work.  Every year for 4 years, he got better and better IMO.  This year, pitchers were pitching around him (games I attended), and he still won POY.  Impressive.

Not really shocking at all- In alot of cases -it seems that D1 schools are more interested in how a kid projects rather than if he can really play. I'm sure we've all seen schools flock to a kid that "looks like a player" is really athletic, big and strong and runs well but makes a ton of errors and struggles to hit 300 in high school. Hopefully a great kid like Keller will get a chance at the next level. Congrats to him on POY honors! Well deserved

Absolutely great news.  I was following Keller during the draft and glad to see he landed with the Nats (my 2nd favorite team).  I'm very interested to see if he signs or decides on a different path as he just graduated.

He was drafted along with 4 others (that I know of) in the Ivy:

Cornell - Jones Jr RHP 4th round DiamondBacks

Princeton - Fagan Sr LHP 9th round A's

Columbia - Speer Sr. LHP 27th round Indians

Brown - Franco Sr. MIF - 38th round Braves
