As I understand it (the process may vary from district to district), the coaches board the kids on their teams and list/post district stats. They vote for 1st and 2nd teams after considering special awards like offensive MVP, pitcher of the year, newcomer, etc. Coaches do not vote for their own kids. It is my impression that honorable mention selections are at the discretion of each coach for his team -- just an impression. I think there is some back scratching, it's only normal. Certainly statistical awards can be misleading.

"Left"-handed people might vote to throw out all district recognition (I crack myself up) -- but I like seeing the lists and names that I recognize.
I have no first-hand knowledge to support my "impression" -- I suppose the idea takes away from the thought that all kids are selected by vote -- but it adds a dimension that players can be recognized for their contributions to the team in areas that are not reflected on stat sheets....especially seniors or younger players whose work ethic and attitude are critical for team unity.

Here is how our district does has done it over the past 4 years.

Coaches come with their district stats. We start with the awards...Offensive, Defensive players of the year, MVP, Sophomore of the Year, Newcomer of the year, Coach of the Year(If you win district, congrats, you are coach of the year). If you win one of those, that is what you get and you are not nominated at your position.

Then we nominate players for 1st team All-District at their position, but you can not vote for your own kid. Then we go to 2nd team All-District nominations, not always, but usually it winds up being the kid that lost the 1st Team vote.

As for honorable mention, in our district, it is left up to the coaches discretion. I also know of some districts that only allow people to be named honorable mention if they were nominated, but did not get, 1st or 2nd team.

Personally, I go into these meeting as a realist. I know who I am going to nominate for 1st or 2nd team based on their stats. Sometimes it goes just like I thought it would. Sometimes my kids numbers are better than others at their position so we do better than I thought we would.

I will speak for myself, but at our district's all-district meeting, there is little "politicing"...the numbers speak for themselves. Of course, not everyone walks away happy, but then again, not everyone can be 1st team all-district.

Just my take,

I think alot of parents want to think there is more "politicing" than there really is - but most "All-District" teams that I have seen I agree with 90% of the selections.

I think one case of a player getting "screwed" are those good players who play on bad teams - it is tough getting full consideration for a "All District" selection if your team performs poorly.

I have been on both ends of having my sons voted on or not on various "superlative" teams. If he is on I think it was a fair vote and if he is not I think the process is rigged.
