No, Stilllearning something is clearly wrong with your logic.... the purpose of the All State team is to recognize the best players in the state, not to recognize the best players in the state who are on a team that made it the furthest..

I'm sure the members of that team who won states with no players on the allstate team would much rather have a state championship ring than be on an allstar team.

Who was the Gatorade Player of the Year for Virginia? How could a Gatorade POY, not be on the All-State Team.

Those teams do not recognize the best players, they represent the best players that where represented.....

As is most individual awards, including Gaterade POY. You don't think alot of well representation goes into that award? JMO
My point is not that there cant be individual players who are not on the best team that deserve to be recognized but when you see teams with multiple players on an All State team makes me wonder why they were not more successful as a team?
Then a team wins a State Tittle and they dont even have one guy that is on the team...not even one?

Reminds me of coaching little league and a coach that had won three ball games would send 5 or 6 of his players to an all start tryout? The thinking at that level was always- "if you had that many good players why didnt you win more?"

I never saw the kid who was Gatorade Player of the year pitch but he must b pretty good- he was his high schools State Championship #1 pitcher and is going to play the next level at a Blue Chip D1 school.

I dont feel like that logic is flawed- in fact I would have a harder time defending the absence of players from the all state team
I agree with you Stilllearning, that is why I have always thought that they should wait until the baseball season is completed before they decide selections. The All State team was selected before the States were even completed. Maybe Menchville didn't have a say or was not engaged in the process to make a difference with the decision because they were too busy trying to win States.

I am going to take a quote from a member in another spread that I agree with
quote:
It is difficult to weigh outfielders, infielders, pitchers, 2-way players, catchers and pure hitters in a POY designation. For me, it comes down to impact and what player can change a game if 100% at his best.

Great back and forth in this spread

The players in the VHSCA all-star game are selected by a group of coaches specifically for that game, and aren't necessarily All-State players. Last year, there also were at least two players that I know of who were selected to play in this game but who weren't available to play due to prior commitments to their summer league teams or other conflicts; neither of them was All-State, but both were very solid players who are already doing well at the next level.

As with selection of the All-State team, selection of players to this all-star game is full of politics, tit-for-tat selections, and many other issues -- not to mention player interest in, and availability for, playing in the game once they're selected. Typically you'll see many of the very best players, most of them familiar names, and they're certainly ALL very good players. It's just that selection to this all-star game is a great thing for a player to list on his baseball resume and in his college team bio, but it simply isn't a perfect snapshot of who the best players in the state are at the end of that season.
