Hi Guys. Im doing a little research here and can't think of a better place to get some help. I would like to collect a data base of the "Best"professional baseball players, coaches, or anyone who has made a name in professional baseball that played high school baseball in Illinois. I am looking for the players name, High School he attended, and when he played high school ball. Feel free to back your case for why he should be considered a top player if you wish. Some will be obvious. Guys who only played minor league ball excluded. This could be fun.

Great Idea! But may I make a suggestion. Why not have this be a two-step process. Maybe we can gather a collection of major league baseball players from Illinois High Schools regardless of their "greatness". Then, once this list is compiled, we could vote and judge with all of the possible candidates.

Just a thought.

All 3 are correct:

Herzog is from the E. St. Louis area (New Athens), Thome is from the Peoria area, and Schofield is from Springfield (Sacred Heart I believe).
Brett Butler--Libertyville HS

Dave Otto--Elk Grove

MAine South with 4 Major Leaguers!!!!!!!!

Dave Bergman--Tigers--Class of 71

Joe Zdeb--Royals--Class of 71

Jim Walewander--Tigers--Class of 80

Jim Rushford--Brewers--Class of 91

Word is that these gentlemen are having their numbers retires at the school shortly. Long overdue.
Don Stanhouse from DuQuoin was a 1st rounder and all star pitcher in the 70's. Gary Geiger from Murphysboro played in the same outfield as Ted Willams and Hank Aaron. Ray Chapman was born in Kentucky but grew up in Herrin. He obviously was the only player ever killed in game. Ray Fosse was another all star who was born in Marion and was most famous for being ran over by Pete Rose. Jeff Keener was born in Pana and has a world series ring with the 82 Cardinals. He still coaches in Murphysboro. Thats just a few off the top of my head from down here.
Springfield guys:

Dick Schofield played many years for the Pirates and Cardinals, and his son played 12 years for the Angels. Cathedral HS not Sacred Heart but Dick Jr went to Sacred Heart

Roger Erickson played 12 years Yankess and Twins, Lanphier HS

Jeff Fassero played for 15 years with Mariners, Cubs, Cardinals, Sacred Heart HS

Jerry Fry Montreal Expos,

Jason Werth playing for Phillies right now and his father Dennis caught for the Yankees for years.

and the most famous from Springfield player Robin Roberts in the Hall of Fame, pitched for the Phillies

He was the tailback/safety on a team that won the state football title.

He was the point guard on a team that took second in the state in basketball (and may have won if their leading scorer, Frank Moran, hadn't sprained his ankle badly in the semi)

And was Rookie Of The Year with the Twins.

He'd probably make many peoples short list for one of Illinois best All Arounds.
