AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas officials are postponing all high school athletic competition until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak.

The move suspends the baseball season and eliminates the regional track championships, said University Interscholastic League Executive Director Charles Breithaupt. He said UIL officials acted on the recommendation of public health officials.

The state golf and tennis championships are scheduled to begin May 11.

The state track meet, one of the largest high school track and field competitions in the country, remains scheduled for May 13-14. But it will require shuffling the schedule significantly.

All UIL academic competitions are postponed as well.

The state tournament dates are still the same. The playoffs will just be "compressed" into 3 weeks instead of 5.

Bi-District - May 21-23, 1 game or 2 out of 3
Area - May 25-26, 1 game only
Regional Qtr-Finals - May 28-30, 1 game or 2 out of 3
Regional Semi-Finals - June 1-2, 1 game only
Regional Finals - June 4-6, 1 game or 2 out of 3.

This will make things very interesting for us coaches!
Flights are still going in and out of Mexico City from the U.S. transporting people in and out of Mexico City where the mosts cases and deaths have occurred .......

isn't this a bigger concern than HS sporting events? Flights are not being canceled (yet).

I understand this is big and caution is needed but to me the big risk areas have not taken as much precaution as UIL has.

The UIL press release says, "On the recommendation of Dr. David Lakey, Commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, and in consultation with Texas Education Agency Commissioner Robert Scott..."

so I guess we can thank those guys. Seems they would be recommending halting all school events/gatherings, not just sports.

No way... that would be the last thing. They lose money by the kids not being in class. No money lost by canceling baseball games, etc...

Mr. Lakey, this **** is coming from Mexico. Consult with the US Border Patrol and the FAA to close the border and stop all flights coming in.
