My son is a '09 RHP. He saw limited time (approx 20 innings) on the mound as a Soph. behind two future D1 pitchers. He had a great start to the Summer season, but just before traveling to Az for the Jr. Olympics - boom - he got injured (elbow).

After a few false starts on a diagnosis and treatment plan, his orthopedist finally had an MRI done this fall which showed a stress fracture in the elbow. He is now shut down completely for the next two or three months(this summer he continued to bat, weight train and throw as he was able, although he did almost no pitching), but hopes to be back for his Junior high school season.

My question is given this long layoff and his current status, does anyone have any advice in terms following an alternative recruiting time line for writing letters to college coaches, signing up for college camps, etc.?, e.g. should he wait until he's healthy again to start that part of the process?, etc.

Any guidance will be much appreciated. Thank you.

GrabSomePine - If he was truly behind 2 D1 players on one high school team and he was with a top summer team, then coaches will understand the lack of innings during his sophomore year.

I would get introduction letters out to the schools he is interested in and start the process, they are not going to be that active in checking him out over the winter and many kids are shut down and they don't have that much time over the spring to go to games unless very local.

I would not be seen until he is doing well. Don't mis-inform the coaches about being injured as coaches have contacts but hopefully they see him when he is doing well and it won't matter and if he does his rehab correctly, he could actually be stronger than before.

If you do your job in marketing him, the summer will be his time to shine, get back onto the strong summer team, do the Perfect Game showcase, try out for Area Codes, North South games tryouts, and get into the Bay Area World series and he will have his chance to make a name for himself.

Good Luck! Enjoy the ride!

Your son has the summer before he enters college to be recruited.
Of course most of us would like our sons to have plans in place a bit earlier, but stuff happens, often.
You really shouldn't contact a school until you have something to say. Now is a very good time to begin your homework and be ready when the time is right. If all goes well, your son will have this season (with limited playing time) next summer and fall. Ther are many optins beside HS, but plan wiesly not to break the bank.

Don't jump into the process too early unless you do have something to talk about. JMO.

So true. This is when players are actively scouted and engaged into the process. Mine hurt his shoulder the summer after sophmore year and did well junior year. Heal up, rehab, condition, check mechanics, play ball, get recruited. Good luck.
maybe I missed something ... the regular timeline still works?

as an 09 shut down for 2-3 months he starts throwing mid Jan w/hs team-mates, then has his hs Junior season, summer team season following Jr yr, Sr yr fall season, possible nli in Nov .. and then his hs Senior season, and summer team season after hs graduation

Cool
