Congrats to Post 60.After winning 11 to 1 the first game and 7 to 1 the second you had to wonder if these were the same boys we over read about during the season.I am sure when 60 gets to Richmond they will face better gloves, bats and pitches. You are right IR12,hard hits make things happen.Surprised 280 didn't pitch Mathews he equally has off-speed,but he can throw velocity as well. Thanks for hosting the field draggers efforts showed in the pictures after the game.
Many of the Post 60 kids are dead fastball hitters and that's what they got to hit the last two nights. Matthews would have been exactly what the doctor ordered a time or two through the lineup in middle relief. He's a competitive kid with a good head on his shoulders.

The strangest part of the game last night was IR attempting to steal 3rd with 2 outs, trailing on the scoreboard. Both times were inning enders.
FYI... Post 60 had exactly 4 earned runs in two days - 3 ER of the 11 allowed on Tue & 1 ER of the 7 allowed on Wed.

Pitching choice should be of no conversation here.

Dean Ali allowed exactly ZERO earned runs yesterday in 6 innings, Heath allowed exactly ONE in 3 innings. Anyone at the game should have been able to tell that the errors and IR not stringing together hits were the cause of the losses.

Post 60 made the plays in field and strung together hits.

Also, "hard hits" did't cause the killer throwing errors yesterday or Tuesday. 60 hit the ball well and took advantage of the given baserunners with clutch base hits, but the errors made weren't on rockets either.

Bottom line is, the team that played better for 2 days won... very simple to understand. They played well and deserve their championship.

To add..
Cowgill had his good stuff yesterday, in particular, his change was working (had good sink) and he was throwing it for strikes (taking advantage of the 2-4 inches given on the outside). He leaned on it more than the curve that the guys were used to seeing the 2 times they had seen him prior and were kept off-balance. He deserves credit for a job well-done.

and finally... the "2-cents Bird" .. What IR was trying to say is what everyone else was saying... that he's a junk-ball reliever, not a guy with an 82+ fastball. It wasn't derogatory, and that's why he said "not to knock" ... you, however, offer your reliable instigating, derogatory comment for no good reason that has gotten really, really old.

First, Indian River and Post 280 did a great job hosting the Sr. tournament. Post 60 hosted the Jr. tournament last year and the year before and understands that it requires a whole lotta thankless work from volunteers. Post 280 also deserves credit for knocking off two higher seeded teams in the tournament.

Second, Joe Scanlon who heads up District 2 and Kirk Jeffries, who had the job before Joe and still helps run D2, don't get anywhere near the recognition they deserve for doing many hundreds of hours of essential but thankless work behind the scene like registrations, insurance, game and umpiring scheduling, finances, and all sort of other paperwork plus the promoting that makes Legion District 2 baseball happen for both the Sr. and Jr. divisions. They were essentially "on call" all summer to solve problems and referee disputes. A great many kids get to play competitive baseball over the summer because of those two men.

Third, Post 60 didn't just play well over two days. They played solid baseball over the entire summer going 19-5. Coach Dotolo and Coach Miles brought kids together from different schools and made them into a team that enjoyed playing together.

Don't agree with the claim that Post 60 had only 4 earned runs in the 2 games against Post 280. But even if it were true, this is an example of how stats can be misleading. Stats don't tell the whole story and stats don't tell the story of Post 60's summer. The Post 60 players and coaches always seemed to get the job done when it counted - and it wasn't always the stars who got the big hit, made the big play in the field or pitched thru some big innings. In other words, they played like a team - which is underated these days.

Two years ago IR had a high school season that was all about teamwork. Post 60 is enjoying a similar feeling this summer.

Thanks to Post 280/IR for hosting the tournament. Good luck at the State Tournament to Post 60.
Whole heartedly agree with everything you have added "Ueck" ... all of the "Joes" (Scanlon, Evans, Maggiorie) & Kirk Jefferies are class acts who deserve a ton of credit for their contributions. They really do care about the boys of summer a do great service to our community.

As well, I agree that Post 60 is a strong team. The point of my post is in direct regards to the Championship games, which were the topic of discussion. I mean no slight at all by saying they played well for those two days... they were the best team in the district all season & will represent District 2 well.

As far as the earned runs... yes, they had 3 earned runs in game 1 and 1 earned run in game 2 yesterday... straight from the books. The boys made 8 errors on Tuesday and 3 big ones on Wednesday. And as I said, 60 took advantage of the errors as good teams do.

It was a shame for Ali, who was matching Cowgill pitch-for-pitch even striking out 5 of 6 straight at one point, but the 4th started with a groundout, then an error, then a hit, then a strikeout, then another error... and the 5th started with a flyout, a strikeout, and then an error (should have been a 3-up, 3-down inning), after which the heart of 60's lineup strung together some hits. All 6 runs in the 2 innings = unearned. Stats absolutely DO tell the whole story when it comes to why the Championship was lost for 280IR.

Nonetheless, it was otherwise a good summer of baseball for the IR boys, and it's a shame that it had to end the way that it did for them.

Also... I have to put out there that Josh Carter (c/o 2010) took his hitting to a new level this summer, batting over .400 with 5 HRs & 20+ RBI in 65 ABs to lead the team.. he deserves a lot of credit for the success this team had all season.

and finally... one more guy to recognize is P/1B/3B John Garrett of Post 60. He was given the tournament's "Coaches' Award" for his sportsmanship & on-field play. A well-deserved award as the guy played great baseball. He was 5-for-7 with 3 runs in the 2 championship games (and made all the plays in the field) after tossing a CG on Sunday vs 327 Granby.
