Before we bash Irvin, look through history and see many names in various Halls of Fame that were jerks/troubled off the field.

Babe Ruth was a drunk and a womanizer. Ty Cobb was universally hated by everyone, The media coverage is much more widespread than back in the day.

I do NOT approve of Irvin's behavior, but if the HOF voters are instructed to exclude off the field stuff, he goes in.
Texan,

He was, but then we need to go back and remove everyone from the HOF that doesn't live up to some standard set by people that don't live up to that standard themselves.

Where are you going to draw the line? Brett Favre was addicted to painkillers and went to rehab, is he going in? What if Irvin never got caught...you would support his induction because you didn't know. How many current HOF'ers are guilty of something and never got caught?

Again, I understand strong sentiments against Irvin and I am no fan of his, just offering up an opinion that it may be more difficult to decide what off-field incidents determine whether someone gets in or not.
