Liner to CF. F8 dives for the ball, appears to have gloved it and rolls over on the ground two or three times. As he comes to a stop he raises his glove to indicate a catch. As his arm becomes fully straightened and the umpire calls the out, the ball falls out of his glove.

By rule, no catch.

The umpire has two options: Immediately bring the right hand down and signal "no-catch" while verbalizing very loudly, or stick with the wrong call.

Either way, a discussion with a coach will ensue.

Personally, I'd reather be apologzing for a poor mechanic and get the call right, than apologize for a poor mechanic and let the wrong call stand.

It can easily turn into a major fiasco. We had it happen in a game once with the bases loaded. Umpire called it not a catch so the runners went and then in the middle of the runners moving he changed his mind! We had runners all over the place and there ended up being discussions with both coaches. I don't remember the final outcome of the play, but I know that there were a few coaches who were lucky to remain in the game (from both sides) and I'm pretty sure the runners were not in the "correct" place when it was all said and done.
