TR I have the same feelings. I do however feel there are two sides of things. One, the concept that "shet happens" that we never will have control over. The other is family values which includes respect for your fellow man that many parents, regardless of background, have refused to address because they cannot imagine the kids stepping into that box.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned "gun control"?

If you outlaw guns only outlaws would have guns. You are correct that the gun laws could be more defined but if you want to start somewhere start at home. It's not the fact that people have guns it's about the mentaity of those who use them.

A peaceful pacifistic community, I can only imagine how the victims have reconcilled this tragedy with their devote faith.

Living fairly near this tragedy, and knowing how devout the Amish community is....what is amazing to me is that despite the atrocities this man committed to their innocent little girls, I am fairly confident the Amish community will forgive this man of his horrible deeds and ask for prayers for both his family in addition to their own. It is truly an amazing area to live near and around and to watch this community peacefully live their simple lives in the midst of modern America.

It is so disheartening and sad to see how the very things the Amish try to shield their kids from in today's world, came crashing into their lives and into that one-room classroom yesterday. Just proves that NO ONE is immune from the actions of a deranged psychopath.

Was coming home at dusk on Sunday from a Fall ball game in central Missourri. Strangely enough we passed two Amish carraiges, hastily heading home before it became completely dark going in the opposite direction . ( a small furniture making Amish community lived close by )

My son had never seen a buggy of that sort on the highway before. So we talked about the Amish community and their lifestyle for a good part of the way home. He was intrigued, to say the least.

The next day,...travesty struck the Amish community in Pennsylvania.
Headlines of despair and angst.

My son and I stood frozen as we listened to the news. Isn't it odd how sometimes " timing " can slap ya right between the eyes???

My heart goes out to everyone effected. The Amish are an amazing group of people. I read that they have forgiven the assailant. I pray for strength as I am not so sure if I was in their shoes I would have the ability to do so. My admiration for their ability to forgive and for their courage will continue as always.

We send heartfelt prayers.

I was deeply saddened by the tragedy near Lancaster. I'm all for it, if gun control means being able to hit what you aim at.

A guy used a gun on a deputy sheriff here last week. Not a good career move around here.

Posted October 1, 2006

Face to face with an armed man suspected of killing a Polk County deputy sheriff, SWAT officers riddled his body with 68 bullets.

Altogether, nine officers fired 110 times Friday at Angilo Freeland, who Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said "executed" one of his deputies.

"That's all the bullets we had, or we would have shot him more," Judd said after autopsy results were released Saturday.

The slain deputy, Matt Williams, 39, was shot eight times Thursday when he encountered the killer who had fled into nearby woods after a routine traffic stop.

One bullet was fired at close range behind the deputy's right ear and another was fired near his right temple, with the muzzle of the gun pressing against his skin, the autopsy showed.

Would echo earlier comments...

Watching the TV reports last night and listening to the comments of Amish people (including the relatives of the victims) that they are at peace and forgive the killer, one has to be absolutely amazed at the depth of their faith and abiding trust in the will of God.

In a world of genocide and inhumanity offered as the will of the almighty....There is a clear message here about the relationship of hard work, delayed gratification, and simplicity as a path to a relationship with God.

I hope this message is not lost.

The following was related via PM to a poster on this board whose son was struggling with understanding the loss of a friend. Perhaps it is applicable here as well.
-------

It is difficult to answer the "why"? And certainly that is a struggle depicted in the book of Job.

I have lost loved ones & friends to cancer. Have seen someone struggle with the loss of a child. I don't know how those without God in their lives survive.

Perhaps the following can be of use to your son.

This world was thrown out of kilter, out of God's plan, back with Adam & Eve. And since then, bad things happen. And sometimes they happen to good people.

Something bad happening surely does not mean that someone did something to bring that bad upon themselves.

Since the Good Lord gave us free will, He will not keep every bad thing from happening. Otherwise we would be robots not humans.

So bad things do occur. That doesn't mean that it was God's plan or that He caused it. It is never God's plan for bad things to happen. Yet God can make something good come from any situation if we let Him.

We may or may not personally see that good. It is comforting when we do see it. But sometimes the good is beyond our sight, or beyond our time. We just have to remember that just because we personally don't see the good, does not mean good did not occur.

And for those who are believers, leaving this earthly existence is not a bad thing. Rather, going to God's presence is the best thing that can happen. It is those of us left behind who have the pain of parting and the sense of loss. Yet if we also are believers, we can be comforted by the fact that soon we will see our loved ones again.

Canada is living proof that gun control doesn't work.
There will always be mentally ill crazies who will not care if they are killed.
The public has to be more vigilant and willing to come forward if they notice strange behaviour. Akmost every tradjedy like this had points in time that people could have come forward and stopped this from happening. Maybe we do have to be our brothers gaurdian.

BHD, Absolutely. Your point about "had points in time that people could have come forward and stopped this from happening" is so true. The problem is that many of those who want to stop the violence by eliminating the cause (guns) are the same ones that say that the civil liberties are intruded upon by premature accusations of those who then go off the deep end. The only alternative at this time is to take the stand to protect yourself, your loved ones, your property, pray that you do not become a victim, and pray for the health of those who want to push you to that limit.

I'm sorry if that sounds rather "savage", but I for one will not let my family live in fear, and deep down I doubt any of you would either.

We were at the same showcase that weekend! Looked forward to playing your team but we were not matched up.

It makes me sick to think of what those poor children went through. There is no excuse to ever hurt a child like that. It is too bad that he killed himself. I think he should of had to live with that for the rest of his life!!
I hope these shootings stop. I have no answer on how to make them though.
