I just saw this:

June 8, 2004

Dave Anderson, who gave up his position as the manager of the Detroit Tigers' Triple-A baseball club to return to his alma mater four years ago, has resigned effective at the conclusion of the current contract period which ends on June 30. Anderson has indicated that he will return to professional baseball.

"We would like to thank Coach Anderson for loyal and dedicated service to the University of Memphis and wish him the best in his future endeavors," said U of M Athletic Director R.C. Johnson. "He gave up his position in professional baseball to return to Memphis and help build the baseball program and we are very grateful for his efforts both on and off the field".

Anderson, who was an All-American shortstop for the U of M, became the Tigers head coach in fall of 2000. His first team opened the 2001 season with a six-game winning streak and completed the campaign with a 32-24 record and qualified for the Conference USA Tournament. During the 2004 season, Memphis again posted a winning record and participated in the C-USA Baseball Championship in Houston, Texas. The Tigers defeated third seeded Southern Miss in the opening round and battled UAB and Southern Miss before being eliminated.

Over his four-year tenure, Anderson's teams compiled an overall record of 104 -116 and had 10 players selected in the Major League Draft. He was also instrumental in raising funds to renovate the Tiger baseball locker room and for the leveling and resodding of the playing surface at Nat Buring Field.

A national search for a new baseball coach will begin immediately. Associate Athletic Director Bill Lofton will chair the search committee, which will be made of Associate Athletic Director Bob Winn, as well as others.

Back in August/September last year, Dave Anderson contacted the top senior players in the Memphis Mid-South area at least once (some twice)...then no one heard back from him again.

I know several wanted to consider staying home and playing for the Tigers in Conference USA, but it was as if he had no interest in further pursuing the area's best to keep them in Memphis. We left two phone messages and sent two Email messages indicating interest in a meeting, a tour of the baseball facilities, and the opportunity to watch a fall practice. Like all the others initially contacted, we never heard back from Coach Anderson. So, this decision does not surprise many around here.

As for Phil Clark, who was a candidate when Coach Anderson was selected, he is now at Bartlett HS. Greg Gaston, Sports Director at Channel 24 here in Memphis, reported last night that Coach Clark had indicated to him that he "was not interested in the U of M position." I say: wait and see.

Yes, it has been rumored for some time that he was leaving. He did make offers to 4 players at a Memphis Tiger (AABC-Hagan's team) last week in person and said he was leaving town for a week.

I hope Phil Clark gets an oppty. He may not want the job, but I think he is the best suited for a Mphs college coaching position. We have several former college head baseball coaches coaching in the area... SBEC, Collierville, Cordova, etc, and Clark is better than all of them.

My son never played for him but his teams played against him for years and he has what it takes to teach, motivate and lead... not to mention he has proven to be an excellent recruiter of local talent (ha, ha).
