Another dropped third strike question

1st and 2nd Base are occupied,one out and the batter swings at strike three catcher misses it which becomes a passed ball. I know the batter is out since the base was occupied, but why did the umpire send the other two runners back to 1st and 2nd ?

The umpires made the error here.

The only reason the runners would be returned is if the batter was called for interference. Otherwise the runners can advance.

I could'nt figure it out as it certainly didn't look like any interference. The ball was at the backstop before the batter even moved. Whatever it was , Tony Gwynn argued but lost. The Blues made them return. I 'll have to ask my kid what the ruling was.

Yes he is at San Diego, and he loves it. He was brought in as a pitcher and somehow convinced them he could hit too. All came to a sudden stop as he became injured but he will be ready to go next year.
