I have a son that injured himself after his senior year in HS and is now attending a JUCO that offers 4 year degrees.

He has not played any baseball post HS, but now after taking a year off to heal and taking this year to get his arm back in shape, would like to try out for the team after his sophomore year at this JUCO.

If he makes the team how many years is he eligible? And what complexities come into play if he completes 2 years more at this "JUCO" and them moves on to a university for his masters...does he still have eligibility there as well?

In Florida the community college system has converted to offering a number of 4 year degrees, but athletically administered by NJCAA rules.

The Journey Continues!

A player gets two seasons of competition at JCs, pretty much regardless of his academic year in school.

D1 uses the concept of a 5 year calendar clock, which starts upon first full time enrollment at any college. The clock does not stop, and a player's eligibility is finished at the end of 5 years (or when he has consumed 4 seasons of competition). Transferring to a D1 for a graduate program has somewhat complicated rules, but waivers are not uncommon.

D2, D3, and NAIA all use the concept of 10 full time semesters or 15 quarters, and a player who doesn't attend full time during some terms uses no eligibility. There have been athletes in their 50s playing D2 sports. So for D2/D3, he would have 2 seasons remaining, provided he stays under 10 full time semesters. It is possible to take just under full time hours during the fall, and make it up in the spring or summer, and so stay under 10 full time semesters even past 5 years of college.

NAIA has an additional wrinkle: Once a player has completed the requirements to graduate from college, he is no longer eligible unless he remains at the school where he met the requirements for graduation. So I doubt that a graduate program at NAIA school would work.
