I mentioned in another thread that a college near to us was going to cut baseball. Of course, this is the situation (UNI) I was referring to.

A sports writer here wrote a story that was released before the official announcement. This sports writer is heavily involved in youth baseball and the whole situation angered him. This whole deal stinks if one can see how everything took place. Those coaches and players have been told they can save the program by raising 1.2 million dollars. The head coach there is a friend of ours and I talked to him this morning. I asked what we could do to help him raise the money. He told me the biggest problem is they told him he had to raise the money by April. He and the team will be too busy from now till then playing a college baseball season to raise money.

To make matters worse... The local writer came in to talk to me today about all this. I told him that we don't have a million dollars to bail out the program, but we did want to help. He said he was going to write a story in tomorrow's paper about all those who want to help the program. This man is the guy with the most seniority in the sports department. Later today he called to say he had just been laid off. This after 27 years on the job working for that newspaper!!!

Maybe that story breaking wasn’t the reason he lost his job. Maybe it’s just the economy. But this thing really stinks bad! There is something very wrong here!

Kurt has never been a big baseball fan, but I will mention it to him. Kurt told me once, he gets asked about once a week to give people or an organaztion money, it's all for a good cause and he'd like to say yes to everyone, but sometimes he just has to say no. Maybe after he signs this new contract it will help!
