I was in our local sporting goods store today, and was speaking with the proprietor. He mentioned that he has a connection with a college 4 hours away, and gets asked by the head coach to check out players in our area who have written him. He also generally watches for players as this college is interested in increasing their draw from our state.
This shop is small enough where they know my son by name, and have a general impression of his manners, demeanor, etc. He's a well-mannered kid, so no worries there, however, never knew they might be giving input to any college.
