Notes:
* UT has three (3) "in-state" starting position players (if you count
Nick Crowe who is no longer with the team)
* Eli Iorg is a transfer from Samford and was not seriously recruited by Tennessee out of high school
* Derek Norman (Furman) holds the Furman record for career hits
* Caleb Moore (ETSU) led the nation (DI) in batting average and
doubles this season
* Howdeshell, Carroll, Moore, Norman, Woodard, Phillips and Hyde all live within 25 - 30 minutes (or less) from the UT campus. None were seriously recruited by Tennessee
* Jeremey Stache (Alcoa) and Nick Hill (Bluff City) are at the United States Military Academy (Army) and had exceptional seasons. Both are playing in an NCAA regional. I did not include them in the list because of the extraordinary circumstances involved with academy recruiting and the honor.
* Jack Turner (Nashville) and Derek Farmer (Knoxville) are at the Naval Academy and were not listed above for the same reasons as the players at Army
* Tennessee's current roster lists 32 players, with 12 players from the state of Tennessee.
3 pitchers and 2 position players from the roster list contribute significantly.

The 2004 "in-state" high school crop
Cale Iorg - SS - (Knoxville) - Alabama
Chris Kirkland - C - (Knoxville) - Alabama
Kyle Waldrop - RHP/1B - (Knoxville) - Vanderbilt

Matt McGahey - LHP/Of - (Johnson City) - Virginia Tech
Scott Pettus - RHP/3b - (Nashville) - Vanderbilt
David Price - LHP/Of - (Nashville) - Vanderbilt
Philip Reed - RHP/Inf - (Memphis) - Baylor
Ryan Wilkes - RHP/SS- (Chattanooga) - Kentucky
Ryan Moore - LHP (Chattanooga) - Middle Tennessee

** Also many other 2004 "in-state" players that have signed with DI programs, this is just a sample listing. Tennessee recruited some of the 2004 players very hard, others luke-warm and still others on this list they did not recruit at all.

So what's the point to all these "stats?" Primarily to answer the question posed by fungohitter, but also to illustrate that there are many very good baseball players from the state of Tennessee that are not playing at the University of Tennessee, for whatever reason.

It should be interesting to watch the draft next week (June 7-8) and see problem of not "securing your borders" further illuminated.

Could or would all of the players listed that are not at Tennessee have played in the SEC? My opinion is of course not, but many of them could have.

Could or would all of them played at Tennessee the last 3 or 4 years? Oh yeah ... although problems would have arisen with not enough positions, at bats or mound appearances to go around.

Confused
I am also rather new to this forum and have seen you post this info before, and it is a short trip.....but I am a tad confused! Or at least have some questions?>?

>Did you or have you had a son that was NOT signed or offered "books" at UT?
>You must have a lot of time on your hand?
>Is the assumption that IF UT had signed ALL the in-State players, Ray Ban would have the success all is demanding.
>Is the assumption, IF UT had all the mentioned players, even if he WAS losing, everyone would be happy..........NO maybe happier???
>With the limited amount of scholarships in Baseball, could NOT a list of this kind be established for most, if not all states in the south and southwest??

I could go on, but It just appears that some sour grapes Eek are involved from In-State Dads that either do NOT like Coach Delmonico or were shunned by him??

Do you think the Lottery Scholarships will help spring sports, especially Baseball. I know Polk used them out the "wassou" at Ga. and now is complaining about them since he has none at State??

peddler,
1. The player in question turned him down.

2.He just couldn't stand it, I wondered how long it would take. biglaugh

3. No, but maybe there wouldn't be so many empty seats.

4. It doesn't seem as bad when I look at rosters.

5. Maybe by a few, but in general everyone is over it.

6. No, I've posted many stats on this subject and I don't see many keeping those scholarships with the rigors of being an athlete and a student.

peddler,

You have made assumptions about my post that are inaccurate.

My point is simply this:
The University of Tennessee baseball program does not do as good a job of recruiting the in-state high school and junior college talent as I personally feel that they should.

My opinion is that too many very good young players are getting away. I add the juco players in my comments because the UT staff historically has recruited a couple of juco players per year, but rarely from the state jucos.

I have been and will remain a fan of the program. Having said that it does not mean that I should stick my head in the sand and ignore a problem.

If you will take a look at most of the DI programs in the deep south you will find their rosters are almost exclusively made up of in-state players. Of course there are exceptions.

If, In my opinion the talent at the high school and juco programs in the state of Tennessee were not good enough to sustain the UT program I would never utter a word. Fact of the matter is that the talent is here and has been for the past 5 years!

Can the UT program play at a top 30 level with only in-state kids? Probably not, but why not be loyal to the state and the fans that support the program first and then mix in trips to California and Florida?

When I go to a major showcase and talk to an out-of-state program's coach he tells me that they will continue to get players from Tennessee, because it is so easy, I get worried.

My post states that UT could not "take" all of the players listed.

If UT had all of the players listed would they be better? In my opinion yes they would. Something about a kid playing for HIS school. The school that he grew up dreaming about playing for. Good old neighborhood pride.

Loyal and "orange-blooded" UT fans can beleive what they will, but watch what happens in Nashville, now that the "Recruitinator" is adding very good Tennessee players into the program.

As for your question about my son .... you probably stepped "out-of-bounds" with that one but I will answer it.

Out of high school my son was offered an opportunity to walk-on at Tennessee, he chose to go to a juco and get playing time. Coming out of the juco he was made a scholarship offer but chose another school because the "fit" at Tennessee was wrong.

Sour grapes? None here. Next time you are at Lindsey Nelson stadium stop by the brass plaque, on the left, as you enter the main gate turnstiles ... If you read the names on the monument you will see that I have placed my money where my mouth is.

I wish for two things when it comes to the University of Tennessee baseball program:
1) Year in year out success
2) An opportunity for Tennessee high school players to wear the orange and white, if they are good enough

Maybe I know too much about what happens when the UT coaches talk to the kids in-state. I get to hear many disturbing tales about what goes on.

Catchers recruited as pitchers, even though they have never pitched at the high school level. Offers made for "books" only to be taken back a couple of days later and then offered again hurriedly after finding out that another school is in the hunt. Offers made that are only good until the next day .... and on and on.

Spidey,
I strongly disagree!!!!

They are REAL. Smile
hsbbweb,
I apologize if I overstepped my bounds. And I apologize for "regurrrrjataatin" this subject.
I am new to this forum, not local baseball. I can not speak for the entire state....but I have for years and years listened to "DADS" of highly recruited local players say and say and repeat at the top of their lungs, there is NO way my son will EVER play for Delmonico. Even at that he pursued them and they went somewhere else.
To that point, I guess(and I dont know) Rod may have brought some of this on himself?? I truly am not sure exactly why, but a lot of local "baseball" people just plain do NOT like Rod.
The constant guessing every year, that this is his last......probably adds to the mix?
So is he losing in-State recruits because another school offers more or because of the Head Coach??
Since you have been there, could you shed some light for me on scholarships for baseball. Is anyone at UT on a full Baseball Ride? Does any Div 1 school give full rides for baseball? It has been my impression, they mix Pell Grants, Food, Books, etc. and attempt to sweetin the pot as much as possble. In that vain(I still think Lottery Scholarships will help), would that help in attracting and keeping local products if it easier to increase what an instate kid gets??
Anyway, I thank you for you honesty and really not "tryin" to stir anything up here, just attempting to learn!! Smile
