Maybe not the best name for what I'm looking for.

I like to keep of my player's AB's and rate them, not just on Batting Average (which I think is a little overrated), but also on whether they moved a runner up, hit the ball hard, had a good at bat, etc.

Does anyone have a formula that they use, like a + for a hit, ++ for a hard hit, - for a K....

I'd love to see some other's formulas to compare it to mine, which I'm sure is inadequate.

Thanks

I think you have the right idea and learned that traditional statistical categories can often leave gaps that do not give the total picture.

I looked for something similar years ago and settled on just making my own. Having a wife as a scorekeeper made it much easier.

One category I was always interested in was “consistent hard contact”. So I designed a category that I called BTO (By The Outfielder). I wanted to know when a hitter hit the ball “on the button” that would have traveled past an outfielder if it were not touched. Example-hard hit ground balls, line drives and hard fly balls are scored a “hit” and everything else is an “out” (compute using regular batting average formula).

To me this was a better barometer than just batting averages, on base and slugging %. I still keep track of this with my son in junior college today. I also continue to give an extra “half point” when these occur against a superior pitcher, with two strikes and/or with runners in scoring position.

I believe that every MLB team tracks hundreds (maybe thousands) of mental and physical “little things” that players attempt while hitting, running bases, defensive play and pitching. This is popularly called Sabermetrics today but has been used one way or another for decades to negotiate contracts and project current professional players.

I commend you for tracking, but more importantly, for teaching these "little things" to your young players.
