My son was on the mound with a runner on base. Batter hits an inside the park homer. Our coach yells to him to go over to second and tag the base because he thought the batter missed the base. When he did that the ump asked him "why he was tagging the base". He replied the runner missed the base. "Which runner"? The batter he says. Ump calls the batter out.

My question is what does the player need to do in order to make any appeal play?

Thanks

For OBR, the best definition is Rule
7.10 "Comment"
An appeal should be clearly intended as an appeal, either by a verbal request by the player or an act that unmistakably indicates an appeal to the umpire. A player, inadvertently stepping on the base with a ball in his hand, would not constitute an appeal. Time is not out when an appeal is being made.
For HS it would be: NFHS rule 8-2 Penalty note

during a live ball the defense must make a verbal appeal unless a play by its very nature is imminent and obvoius to the offense....(like a runner coming back to touch a missed base and the fielder beats him to it) thats obvious by its very nature.....

And in competitive levels, the umpire should not prompt the player in how to appeal......
Doesn't sound to me like the issue is relating to a clear appeal. The question would be, 1) does the fielder appealing have to indicate to the umpire WHICH runner he is appealing if more than one runner crossed that base during the play and 2) is it right of the umpire to clarify with the player which runner he is referring to?

Yes he needs to let the umpire know which runner if more than one crossed the bag....one may ahve touched and the other didnt....

As I stated before I am not in favor of prompting players in the higher competitive levels on how to appeal....to me that would be assisting and that would not be fair to the other team ...
