Take the ball over to the bag and touch it. No need to get on the rubber and do anything.

OBR or NFHS?

1. Throw to that base, and state "runner X, missed X base, or runner X left base X early..

2. Tag the runner with the ball and state, the runner missed X base.

3. In HS, if the ball is not live, one can simply tell the umpire without doing either of the above.

I had one last weekend OBR, U14. Fly ball to deep LC, R1 tags and advances to 2nd. Upon recieving the ball near the mound F1 throws the ball to F3 who while holding the ball places his foot on 1B.

They both stand there looking at me, I in turn stand there and look at them. Finally, I crack under the pressure, "what"? F1 says, "oh, uh, the runner left early from 1st. Ah, now I see, an appeal. Safe was the call by the way.

So teach the kids to "state their intentions".
Not a question either, "I'm appealing the runner for.....

You ask me, "did he leave early?" I'll answer with "I, know the answer."

I pulled one off on one of our rookie umpires last season. While playing softball, I'm F1, fly ball to right, R3 tags and scores.

I get the ball back, and state "I would like to appeal the runner at 3rd, he left late".

Umpire says "no he didn't." "Oh", I says, "then he musta left early, ring em up".. Got a good chuckle..
