This is a new product that helps with the grip of the bat and I have had many hitters ask me if they can use these in games. The Major League rule book states that "On the bat, for up to 18 inches from the knob, the hitter may use any material or substance to aid him in gripping the bat".

Does this product fall into this rule?

It's called "The Bat Jack", and it is connected directly to the handle of the bat.

The website explains... http://www.TheBatJack.com

If you want to advertise, contact the owner...in the remote case that you are really wanting an answer...the answer is no, it is not legal to use in games. It is clearly marketed as a training aid...

What rule code, Jimmy?

I just found the rule code...
MLB Official Rules 1.10 (c) The bat handle, for not more than 18 inches from its end, may be covered or treated with any material or substance to improve the grip. Any such material or substance, which extends past the 18 inch limitation, shall cause the bat to be removed from the game.

This is the only rule that talks about the bat handle.
Clearly illegal for use in NFHS rules...

Clearly illegal for use in NCAA Rules...

Under OBR it is some what less clear, but I would say illegal as well...the bat, although allowing a safety grip of tape or substance, is still required to be a smooth rounded stick of solid wood...

And add that to the verbiage of the website alone that clearly states it as a training aid only and never makes any mention of a legal use in games.

I would not allow it.

The queston of legality in the OP is secondary to the desire for free publicity.

In the OP, he quotes the MLB rule. Later in the thread he says that he just found the rule.

This is guy is just pushing cr@p merchandise and looking for some free ad space.

Didn't just find the rule, someone asked me for the code and I had to find that.

If you really are an umpire, then I understand how you could get confused. Just kidding... Smile

I couldn't agree with you more about kids not swinging the bat enough!
