AREA CODE GAMES:
8.5.09
Chicago White Sox 5, Texas Rangers 5

After seven innings were in the books, it looked like the ChiSox would roll to an easy victory over the boys from the Lone Star State.

It wasn't to be, as they allowed the Rangers to score five runs and tie the game -- after not allowing a hit through seven innings. After two games and 18 innings at Blair Field, all four competing teams were tied.

Righty Dylan Bundy (Owasso / Sperry, Okla.) threw three spectacular frames, striking out seven, allowing no hits and no runs, even though he hit a batter and had two fielding errors behind him. Defense led to the White Sox's late-inning collapse, as they had a total of five errors in this game.

Southpaw Jordan Shipers (South Harrison / Bethany, Mo.) threw one scoreless inning for the White Sox and 2011 prospect Archie Bradley (Broken Arrow / Muskogee, Okla.) kept the Rangers off the base paths in the fifth, sixth, and seventh. Shipers, a 6-4 righty, was hitting 95 mph on the radar gun and is a major prospect as a quarterback in football.

Shaky Texas pitching allowed the White Sox to score two runs in the first inning and another in the second to take a quick 3-0 lead. The White Sox scored on a variety of mistakes: passed balls, wild pitches, double steals and fielder's choices.

In the top of the sixth inning, the White Sox tallied what they thought we be two insurance runs, as shortstop Jacob Rice (Union / Tulsa, Okla.) scored on yet another passed ball. Catcher Michael Maddle (Tell City, Ind.) then drove in infielder Kellen Sweeney (Jefferson, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) on a double down the third base line. Maddle's run-scoring double was one of the best hits of the day.

It took two fine defensive plays in the infield to keep the no-hit bid alive through six innings, but outfielder Kendrick Perkins (La Porte, Texas) finally broke it up with a liner to center field on an ill-advised breaking ball with an 0-2 count to lead off the bottom of the eighth.

The Texas Rangers made the White Sox pay after loading the bases with no outs.

Third baseman Spencer Davis (The Woodlands, Texas) hit a two-run single to left center. First baseman Jared Lakind (Cypress Woods, Texas) then scored after two errors on a single play -- an errant throw by the catcher to the first baseman after a passed ball on a called third strike. Shortstop Matt Lipka (McKinney / Frisco, Texas) then hit a clutch two-run single to tie the game. He was thrown out trying to advance to second base to end the inning, but the damage was already done. Neither team could muster anything in the ninth.

Although the Texas Rangers pitching generally struggled, righty John Simms (College Park / Woodlands, Texas) displayed a wicked curveball in the late innings.
RHP Dylan Bundy Impressive

8/5/2009 9:16:15 PM

RHP Dylan Bundy (Sperry, OK) was is a rare 2011 player at the Area Codes, the irony being that this is already his second appearence in Long Beach. The #5 ranked 2011 prospect on the PGX prospect ratings was very impressive in his first inning of work. He threw between 91-94 mph on his fastball and snapped off a couple of impressive curveballs as well.

One scout made a comparison between Bundy and the Dodgers All-Star RHP Chad Billingsley at the same age, which seems like a good comp.

RHP John Simms Abusive for Rangers

8/5/2009 11:07:36 PM

RHP John Simms (College Park HS, TX) was the most impressive of four Rangers pitchers, throwing 3 easy innings. Simms sat in the 88-90 mph range on his fastball and had a big breaking 78-81 mph slider that the White Sox hitters had absolutely no change to make contact with.

Rangers Tie It Up with a 5 Run 8th Inning

8/5/2009 11:00:57 PM

The Rangers, no hit for 7 innings, took advantage of 3 hits and 3 defensive miscues by the White Sox to tie Game #2 up 5-5 after 8 innings.

The two key hits were a 2 run double by 3B Spencer Davis (The Woodlands, TX) and a game tying 2 out, 2 run single by SS Matt Lipka (McKinney HS, TX)

Kendrick Perkins Ends No-Hitter

8/5/2009 10:51:33 PM

Rangers OF Kendrick Perkins (LaPorte, TX) lined a leadoff single up the middle off the fourth White Sox pitcher of the day, LHP Albert Minnis (Lawrence, KS), to break up the White Sox no-hitter in the 8th inning. Minnis got ahead of the left handed hitting Perkins 0-2 with two 88 mph fastballs, but hung a curveball out for Perkins on the next pitch.

The White Sox have proceded to make errors on back to back double play ground balls to load the bases for the Rangers, who trail 5-0.

No Hitter Continues for White Sox

8/5/2009 10:40:18 PM

After 7 complete innings of a scheduled 9 inning game, the three White Sox pitchers, Dylan Bundy (3 innings), Jason Shipers (1 innings) and Archie Bradley (3 innings still have a no-hitter going. The White Sox infield, especially SS Dayne Parker (Roff, OK) have made some good plays on choppers and slow rollers the last few innings with Bradley on the mound.

White Sox Continue to March Out Pitching Prospects

8/5/2009 1024 PM

Dylan Bundy threw the first 3 innings for the White Sox with dominant stuff, including a fastball that touched 94. Then Jason Shipers buzzed three hitters from the left side with a 91 mph heater.

Now RHP Archie Bradley (Broken Arrow, OK) has come in to pitch the 5th and has raised the bar. His delivery and arm action aren't quite to Bundy or Shipers level but his arm strength certainly is. Like Bundy, Bradley is a 2011 with a mature, strong body (6-4, 210). He's thrown about 4-5 pitches already in the 94-95 area and is throwing an 82 mph slider as an off speed pitch.

It probably isn't surprising that the Rangers don't have a hit after 5 innings and are behind 3-0.
Gotta love the internet!!! I found this update on DAY2 and a TX roster on the College Baseball Blog.

Texas Rangers 9, Washington Nationals 7
The first two days at Area Code have seen many spectacular defensive plays in the outfield. The infield, however, is a different story.

The bats were hot during Day 2's Rangers-Nationals contest. "The fast dirt of Blair has caused some problems for the kids out there," said an American League area scout. "Blair has a way of doing that: separating the good from the bad. It reveals the truth."

The Nationals did enough with their bats to stay in the game, but simply made too many poor defensive plays to win.
Nationals starting pitcher Austin Voth (Kentwood/Kent, Wash.), a righty, did a spectacular job, allowing only one hit through the first three innings. Voth went out for the fourth inning, but the Rangers' bats eventually caught up to him. He was pulled after 3 1/3, highlighting the Nationals' shortage of available arms because of injuries on their roster.

The Rangers scored five runs in the fourth inning, thanks in part to defensive errors in the infield. Christian Summers (Central/San Angelo, Texas) scored after hitting a single, and outfielder Anthony Bryant (Connally/Pflugerville, Texas), drove in two runs with a two-out single.

Texas struck again in the top of the fifth inning, as Matt Lipka (McKinney/Frisco, Texas) scored on an error by the Nationals' third baseman, who made an off-target throw to the first baseman. Brian Ragira (James Martin/Arlington, Texas) then scored on a single by Jared Lakind (Cypress Woods, Texas) after the catcher dropped a nice throw by Nationals right fielder Drew Vettleson (Central Kitsap/Bremerton, Wash.). Vettleson got scouts' attention by making three frozen-rope throws, one to home plate and two to third base, even though he didn't record a putout on any of them.

Despite the defensive shortcomings, Joshua Sale (Bishop Blanchet/Seattle) and Vettleson did nearly everything possible offensively to keep the Nationals in the game. Vettleson racked up four hits while Sale went 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs.

In the bottom of the fifth with his team trailing 7-1 with two outs, the bases loaded and a 3-2 count, Sale drew a walk to score Peter Summerville (Seattle Academy/Seattle). Catcher Alex Sloan (Sumner/Puyallup, Wash.) then came through with a bases-loaded single to make it a 7-4 game.

The Nationals continued to close the gap as Washington scored on yet another miscue in the bottom of the sixth, but Texas got an insurance run on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh. Vettleson scored after his third hit in the bottom of the seventh and Texas scored its ninth run on a passed ball in the top of the eighth. Trailing 9-6 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Vettleson came up with his fourth sharply hit ball, a single. He took two bases on a passed ball and eventually scored on Sale's single, but the Nationals could muster no more runs.

Cincinnati Reds 7, Texas Rangers 5

In the third game of the day the Reds hooked up with the Rangers. 24 scored on a singe by 25 and an error on the shortstop, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead. Jake Cole struck out the side in the first, but his defense let him down.

The Rangers tried to put something together in the second and managed to push their first run of the game. It came when Tyler Pearson hit s grounder to third. A bases loaded single by Alex Silver drove in Jared Lakind and Anthony Bryant, giving the Rangers a 3-1 lead. All three runs scored off that two out error.

In the top of the third Taylor Lindsey walked and later scored on an RBI single to right by Matt Wollenzin (Green Mountain HS, Colo.). The Reds then loaded the bases and Sam Wilson belted a single to left and scored two, and once again the Reds had the lead at 4-3.

Josh Alexander then came up and drove in one on a single up the middle. Chris Roglen then grounded out and scored Sam Wilson, giving the Reds a 6-3 lead.

The Rangers got Brian Ragira to second base, but that was as far as he got. Daniel Mengden ended the inning with a strikeout.

The score remained 6-3 in the fourth and the Reds pushed another run across. Lindsey scored on a ground out by Trey Nielson.

Both teams put a run on the board in the fourth, but the Reds still had a three run lead, 7-4.

It was in the fifth that the Rangers had their best chance to possibly win the game, but Jaycob Brugman (Desert Vista HS, Ariz.) made the defensive play of the game in left (a diving catch) to preserve the lead. The Rangers would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but fail to score.

A final update for the TX Rangers A/C in Longbeach......

TEXAS RANGERS
The Rangers are solid, not spectacular, but they play hard to the last out. Similar to the Washington Nationals, they have improved their performance as the week wore on by making consistent, hard contact with the ball. This is certainly not the most talented Rangers team from a raw skills standpoint compared to what we've seen in past years, but this team takes on the mold of its architect, general manager Randy Taylor, who likes players who just want to win and will do anything to get there. The Rangers enter their last game against the Milwaukee Brewers Blue with a 1-2-1 won-loss record.

Matt Lipka (McKinney, Texas) 6-1, 192 SS Sr.
He's shown he's good with the glove, but even more important, Lipka seemed to control the tempo of the team. As he went, so did the Rangers, as his teammates seemed to follow his lead. Lipka has given a baseball verbal to the University of Alabama. He's made inquiries to walk-on the football team, but if he red shirts in football, he'll have to do the same in baseball so Lipka is not sure he'll be able to do that.

Jacob Felts (Orangefield / Orange, Texas) 6-1, 195 C Sr.
Felts is a strong-bodied backstop who flew to play in the Under Armour All-American game at Wrigley Field in Chicago and hopped on a plane and headed right back to Long Beach. Felts leads by example and his body language is also a big plus.

Brian Ragira (James Martin / Arlington, Texas) 6-2, 180 OF Sr.
A rangy fielder who has made some great catches in the outfield. Ragira has adjusted well to the spacious confines of Blair and the Rangers as a team seem to have adjusted defensively better than most.

Austin Kubitza (Colleyville Heritage / Colleyville, Texas) 6-5, 185 RHP Sr.
Has a mid three-quarter delivery with good deception. Even with that deception, scouts loved the fact he was still throwing strikes.

More standouts for the Rangers include:
Dex Kjerstad (Canyon Randall / Amarillo, Texas) 6-2, 205 OF Sr.
Tyrell Jenkins (Henderson, Texas) 6-4, 175 P Sr.
Jared Lakind (Cypress Woods, Texas) 6-2, 195 1B Sr.
