I went over to Grassfield to Watch them play Greenbrier.

Wow is what I can say about GF Pitchers.

They started a Soph. named Garrett Stallings. Never seen him before but he was throwing very very hard. Mid-Season Form. He handled the first 3 innings no problem. Next on hill Brett Smith. He was on his game too. They are going to be tough to handle. I had to leave to go to work. Not sure how in ended up?

Garrett on the 2016 Canes National team. Outstanding player with a strong PG rating. If you're interested, Dynamic Baseball has a profile here. Excellent young man, great family.

I was taken back how well he looked. A Soph. wow looks like a SR. Very good feel for the game and in complete control of the game. Can't wait to see him pitch again.

You'll get a chance, as Grassfield plays at Nansemond River on Tuesday!  Should be a good one!

One would assume that he will throw.

Cosby pretty much dominated Dinwiddie Saturday.  No disrespect to Dinwiddie, but once again we see Cosby's lineup just looking dominant.  Hunter Williams was low 90's, topped at 93.  With Riley Wilson and Jake Huggins also pitching, Cosby has quality depth.  The lineup is full of current and future D1 commits, including Tyler Fitzgerald (VT), Brad McKay (JMU), Williams (UNC), Ryan Hall (W&M), Huggins (junior who missed fall play but will draw plenty of interest in time), Wilson (UVA).  There were other players I was not familiar with but who also looked strong.

Lee-Davis made mincemeat out of Midlothian.  It was 19-3 when I left, not long after a LD grand slam.  And LD played without their starting SS, out with what I was told was a minor injury.  I can't see anyone in the Capital beating out Hanover in the regular season, but LD has to be the pick to sweep everyone else.  When it comes to playoff time, look for LD to challenge Freeman in 51 Conf. 11.

I can't speak for programs long range plans; but the varsity started 2 sophomores and pitched one more... both the JV and the varsity could be described as smallish in stature. The JV last year beat everyone on the schedule except Cosby and CH, beat JR twice.
What you probably witnessed was a lack of velocity and location, that needs to improve... and the loss of 9 seniors...
From what I'm watching -  the 8th, 9th and 10th graders have a lot of talent and potential... but that probably isn't going to win the Dominion district right now. There are 3 varsity sophomore pitchers that could step up and take over the pitching  right now.
So in summary, there is an uneven shift taking place and I feel the program is in transition.
Playing the young guys now, could really help this program a year from now.

Would like to see that.  I'm actually an alum (from the distant past!), and the program's recent history has been painful.  Used to be a perennial contender, but it seems like ever since Tyler Wilson & Troy Dickman graduated in 2007, and with Jake Lowery having transferred to Cosby after 2006, it's been a tough slog.  Lots of coaching turnover, too, and that never helps.

Appreciate your references to some Midlothian pitchers in the post Moody era but also gamers like Edwards, Cerreto and Mallory made Midlothian competitive.

There are many reasons why a program underperforms and MidloDad makes a valid point about MHS coaching changes.

This is the fourth year of the current coach's tenure.  He does not have the support network of other programs. Talent level is young and they did not perform well Saturday.  It could be a long year.

I do think the single largest contributor to Midlo's decline was the opening of Cosby and the redistricting/reduction in population that it occasioned.  Comparable to what has happened at J.R. Tucker over the years.  There was a time when Tucker was the best baseball program in this state for several years running!

Hanover clearly talented and blessed with arms, but Midlo will compete in the Dominion this year and in the 4A division. The Lee Davis game was a beat down, but this team responded against the State Champs and one of the best pitchers in the state.....

Interesting to see Midlothian hang with Hanover at Hanover on Friday.  Had a 1-0 lead well into the game, lost 2-1 late.  If the RTD is accurate (which is always a very big "if"), a Midlo pitcher named Boggio shut Hanover out for 4-5 innings and Hanover only got 4 hits in the whole game.

Anyone able to confirm or correct that report?

Yes, Graham Boggio was the starting Midlo pitcher and he did a great job.  Hanover scored their two runs in the bottom of the sixth after gaining momentum from a controversial call in the previous inning when Midlo scored what appeared to be their second run of the game on a sacrifice fly after a diving catch by Hanover's right fielder.  After the Hanover coach stormed the field and demanded an appeal at third, the umpires conferred and called the runner out to end Midlo's rally and the inning.  It appeared to be a good tag-up and it didn't appear as though the umps actually saw the tag.

Overall, it was a very well-played, exciting game.  Midlo did not look over-matched; pitching was very good on both sides and no one hit the ball hard.

Midlo - You've lived here longer than I have, but don't you mean the direct redistricting & opening of James River?  If you meant Cosby, I'd like to know how that directly effected Midlothian?

In my neck of the woods there was a definite shift at the time (about 8 years ago) from the redistricting of Clover Hill to Cosby when it opened.  Since that time, Cosby sports have been a juggernaut for sure.

that is correct, Midlo was not over-matched and played quite well. Boggio pitched his game, mixing speeds, keeping the Hanover hitters off balance. Casey was dominant as expected, but for the most part, the midlo hitters were not overmatched. midlo sophomore 3 hitter squared up as did the senior 4 hitter.  midlo put the ball in play and was patient at the plate. It was very encouraging to see Midlo battle and play with heart!
