Baseball Tops West Coast In Attendance For Third Straight Year
Devils lead West Coast for fourth time in past five years

Jan. 17, 2008

TEMPE, Ariz. - For the fourth time in the past five years, Arizona State University baseball led all schools west of Texas in average attendance. The Sun Devils averaged 3,141 fans per game in 2007, placing them 17th nationally and tops on the west coast, according to numbers released by the NCAA. This marks the eighth time in the past nine years ASU has been ranked in the top 20 nationally in average attendance.

The Sun Devils had 38 home games, totaling 116,205 fans in 2007 when they finished 49-15 and made their 20th trip to the College World Series. ASU went 35-3 at home and hosted a super regional for the first time last season.

Arizona State was also tops in the west in 2003 and 2005 and finished second in 2004. The highest-ranked Pac-10 team, the Devils finished 13 spots higher than the next Pac-10 team, Oregon State, which came in 30th with an average of 2,006 fans per game.

Arkansas led the nation in average attendance, as the Razorbacks averaged 8,089 fans over 31 home dates. LSU led in total attendance with 256,537 over 35 games.

Arizona State begins the 2008 season at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark on February 22nd when they host Miami (Ohio) in the first game of the DeMarini Invitational

There was a discussion last fall about attendance on the rivals.com board. It came out that there is no uniform way of counting attendance in the NCAA. Some of the schools listed as having top attendance, really had very little crowds at the game. The schools counted all tickets sold, including gate. Many of the tickets sold go to program boosters that never attend but buy the tickets to help with program funding. I could be wrong, but I believe Arkansas was one of the schools that practiced that policy.

Hey Woodman...

Not buying any of your whining!

Took a long road trip to watch older play against OSU last year in Corvallis...fortunately we got team tickets...was told that EVERY game was sold out for the whole year within a few hours of January release...And yes, in true OSU fashion it rained...hard...for three games...But with Field Turf...and a sea of your black and orange umbrellas they simply don't do rainouts...not a single empty seat...was warned that they were a rowdy bunch...but didn't see any of that on our trip...

So it may be only have been a few thousand and yes it was wet...

...but I'll take a your few thousand quality fans in the stands cheering in the rain over inflated attendance figures any day!

Cool 44

Ok 44...if you won't buy me whining, will you at least buy me a beer?

Thanks for the report from Corvallis. It brought back memories...not of the crowds, because there weren't any back then, but of the rain!

Kinda' like this I 'spose...: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkEvy-9yVyQ

"Learnin' in the Rain!"

I'm learnin' in the rain,
just learnin' in the rain!

What a moisterous feelin',
I'm drippy again!

I'm chaffing at clouds,
all dark up above.

The sun's just a memory,
and I'm ready for flood.

Let the stormy clouds keep
everyone's frown in place.

Come on with the rain,
I've a drain-tile on my face.

I walk and hydro-plane,
on slippery terrain.

Just learnin',
learnin' in the rain!

We've heard a lot about that around here. A major university here has been catching a lot of grief about its football (and sometimes basketball) attendance figures - which always seem high. Recently it was found out that they estimate their attendance by someone looking out at the crowd and picking a number. Another local school counts tickets at the gate. And another school counts tickets sold.
CPLZ is correct, it goes by tickets sold not actual attendance.
Big programs sell most of their seats well ahead of the season to boosters and alumni, that's why you hear that every seat is sold out for most games. For a 100 dollars an alumni will buy season tickets and never attend, just to support the program. The bigger the stadium and more pre season tickets sold, the bigger the attendance records.
I am not sure but I heard somewhere that boosters buy out seats and turn them back in to be resold but not sure if that is recounted in the total.
True fan attendance to me is when it's pouring and the stands are full, or it's 30 degrees or 100 degrees and filled. That gives you a true picture of actual fan attendance. Smile

Arkansas is one of the few schools that actually reports actual attendance and tickets sold. They averaged over 8,000 sold and 6,000 actual in '07.
