This is where I played and graduated from 24 years ago. Then, we were as good as anyone in north Texas. That neighborhood has changed a great deal since then. First, they are a Title 1 school. It is very low socio-economic, it is a majority minority school, their participation is low, and their kids don't play much baseball. They do not have the resources to compete with the likes of Martin, Arlington, and Lamar...not to mention Weatherford, Paschal and the Mansfield schools when they are aligned with them. It is a place that I wish better things for. Coach Powers was the assistant when I was there. He took over I believe in 1995 and they had 4 really good seasons. Since then, it has been down hill. He could have left for "better" jobs but didn't. He has coached those kids up and they compete. Personally, I couldn't do it. I can't go into a season knowing I have little or zero chance of winning.
Whoever takes this job, understand what you are getting into. Those kids don't play for DBAT, the Tigers, Patriots, or those types in the summer. The booster club works hard, but you're not playing at Rangers Ballpark for a fundraiser. Don't think you're going to make a difference because now "these kids are going to get coached up," they have been. Just be yourself, give those kids your all, ask them to do the same. Then, like Coach Powers, you can live with the results.
