My son is a junior....pitcher & SS.  He does a good job of throwing over the winter to be ready for spring.  He broke his thumb 3 weeks before the season so actually got more throwing work in this year than normal.  First 2 games of the year....played SS....no issues before, during or after the game.  3rd game...again playing SS.  Had some pain in his throwing arm in warmups...on the front of the bicep...about 3" above the elbow.  Made a couple throws in the first 2 innings that I could tell hurt him a little.  He made one in the 4th...but didn't show any sign of discomfort.  He is standing in the on deck circle in the bottom of the inning...and I'm right outside the fence.  He says "it's fine...doesn't hurt at all anymore".  Made two long throws in the last couple innings...absolutely no pain at all.

Next day, throws a complete game (7 innings)...right at 90 pitches.  Threw great...8 K's, no walks, hit 86 in the second and was still 84 in the 7th.  No pain at all...before, during or after.

Two days later...said he started feeling it a bit in warmups.  Had to go almost behind third in the first inning to field a grounder.  Made the throw...got the out...but was in noticeable pain after.  Non-league game, so he finished it out in LF....had to fly balls to him...both with no runners on and the SS came out to the ball.  DH so he tried to throw between games....nothing, no pain, felt like he was good to go, but coach used him at DH just to be safe.

He went to our trainer today...she is very good.  She did an electric muscle stimulation, said the muscle in the bicep is very tight.  Also did some type of massage thing and gave him a couple very specific stretches to do.  With the weather, it looks like we'll be off til Wednesday or Thursday so we'll see how it goes.

Has anyone ever had pain like this that is there....then goes away in a matter of minutes like it did his first game??? Any ideas??

My son struggled with the same thing. Usually, it would happen on throws from third base. It would then be fine until a later throw. The same thing started occuring this season with his pitching pre-season. Almost every bullpen. After looking at video, I noticed he had developed a habit (didn't have it before) of letting the strike foot land a good six inches or more off line toward third base. I did the same thing for a number of pitches on purpose and felt the same bicep strain. Once we corrected it, there has been no problem. So, I watched him taking grounders and throwing from 3b from a 1b pov. Sure enough, he had the same problem. Watch your son closely (take video form 1b on a few throws if possible) and see if he isn't maybe throwing off a front foot that is a little off line. It's my belief that this retards deceleration and causes that exact strain in the bicep.

I have done some reading on another site since I first posted....and there was another mention of this.  He does throw differently when playing SS then he does when pitching.  He throws from a much lower arm slot....not over the top as he does when on the mound.  I'm guessing he gets his throws off a little quicker that way...but he does end up coming across his body more than he does when he's pitching.  Maybe this has something to do with it.  We have a video that we shot in October...that shows both.  We're going to miss a couple days due to weather...probably a good time to work on it and see if it's something he can correct.
