My son was pitching in a tourny this weekend (he is almost 14), and he pulled himself out of the game because his arm started to hurt. He only pitched 2 innings, which is unusual for him, but what was really strange was where it hurt. He had a gradual pain on the lateral side of his throwing arm. It started, and was generally located in the area of the insertion if the right deltoid. After speaking with him, the pain did not seem to get better or worse when he was actually throwing the ball, it was just a pain that was gradually getting worse as time went by. He was throwing with good velocity and location right up until the point when he pulled himself out.

Have any of you heard of pain in this location? Something to worry about? (Yes, I know that all pain is something to pay attention to, and I won't completely ignore it and will get it checked out by a doctor if it persists or returns...)

Irishdad,
Sounds like an area where son pulled a muscle last year. It only hurt when he threw. He went to doctor immediately and was put on PT and anti inflammatory and stopped pitching for a week with a gradual throwing program for three weeks until he returned to the mound.
Pain is something you should always check out. Regardless of what it is, he shouldn't rush back onto the mound.
