Basically a person who follows baseball closely in a certain area. Will recommend potential players from that area for the Area Scout to see.

Mostly compensation (if any) is based on the player they recommend being signed or maki9ng it to the Big Leagues.

Some have more enfluence than others. Some claim to be more than associate scouts. Some claim to be associate scouts even though they're not. Some are very good baseball people.
I am an associate scout and PG nailed it and he should be able to. Lol

In my org I work for an area scouting director. He assigned me an area of the state to work. I pass information to him on players I have seen and I have heard about. He takes that information and gives it to a paid scout who later will see the player play. Sometimes I will be asked to go see a player the Scouting Director has heard about or is following. I will report back to him on what I saw. Sometimes and area scout will call me and ask me to do the same thing for him.

I get paid when a player I turn in actually signs with our org. I do not get paid unless the player signs with us. You value to the org is based on your ability to evaluate players you have been asked to go see. Your ability to send in information on players they have not seen that is credible and usefull. Your contacts with coaches from all levels that allows you to gain information on players that you can pass on. And on how hard you work to get out and see and find players they would be interested in.

I have been fortunate over the years to "discover" some talented players. I have also had the misfortune of having those players signed by other teams. But the joy is not in the money I can tell you that. The joy is in finding that kid and seeing the process begin and turning into something special for the player. The vast majority of the players I ID end up in college. And I enjoy helping them in that process as well.
Thanks, Coach May. The reason I ask is that my son has just started with a new travel team and the administrator/asst. coach that deals with assisting players with colleges and recruiting said he was an associate scout for MLB Team X. The organization appears to have a laudable track record of helping their players land on to good and great college programs. They have also had players who went on to be drafted.

I know that it won't come as a surprise to the many of you who have read and benefited from Coach May's advice on this website (myself very much included). However, I felt like this was a good time to offer the personal observation that no one I know in baseball does a better job of helping young players find their most appropriate place in the game.

K., I know it hasn't meant much in the way of dollars to you over the years; but, it's been priceless from the perspective of a lot of area players and their parents.
