Folks, I need some second opinions here so I don't look at this from a one-sided viewpoint.

Fall ball is just around the corner, and the guy who runs our local team just contacted me (I am an Asst. Coach) about my 2016 playing. Problem is, he (the coach) wants to play 16U for the 2d consecutive year. I guess winning a league trophy is the goal.

A little info: my son is the youngest player on the team (15U eligible) - the majority of the roster will be seniors (though 16U eligible). My son is really the only player that has played outside with club teams; some of these players did not play anywhere this summer, and a couple have never been on a varsity field.

My initial thought was we should be playing 17/18U...which is exactly where my son wants to be. He has an issue with HC, and he doesn't see any advantage to continue playing 16U.

Thoughts? Thanks.

CabbageDad, thanks for the good questions.

Right now he's working on strength and agility. Looking to improve for junior season in HS and next summer. We can typically find another team if need be no problem. The two upsides are he gets inning pitching with the local team and it's fairly inexpensive.

As far as the fall team, they really only play in a local (North Jersey) league. I have tried to get them to do a tournament or two but I think it's out of the world to these guys. They really don't have a concept of what is out there, IMO. They have also asked me if I can recruit two boys my 2016 played with in tournaments this summer for the roster. So I think they may be a tad short without my son playing.

The funny thing is the HC and his right-hand guy's kids are really good ballplayers. I would think they would like to push them to play against better competition. But as somebody told me "they want to win a trophy".

As for fall showcases/camps, we are looking at the ones he is interested in now. I anticipate he will go to at least three beginning in September.

The more I type the clearer this all gets.

Go with you gut feeling.. above is your gut feeling.

My son is going through the same thing.. play local fall ball is like a sand lot game.

so he is going to play with his summer team and play fall ball games in KY, Ohio and Florida.

Yes, you are part of a team but you are also an individual looking to better your skills

for the next level.

good luck,

Joe
